If there has ever been evidence of the Willamette valley being turned into a paradise of fruit orchards those indications are now extant. Acre after acre of the best land is being set to nurseries, and orchards by the score are being set to trees this winter, and spring will find many more fields of five to twenty acres of the choicest land set to fruit trees. Quite a number of counterfeit half dollars are in circulation in Washington county, especially in the neighborhood of Glencoe, one merchant there having taken in as many as six in a day. A correspondent of the Corvallis Times calls attention to a law on our statute which provides for the payment of bounties on certain kinds of wild animal scalps. The intention of the law is all right, but the danger lies in the fact that it is only a short distance across the mountains to where coyotes are plentiful and they could easily be slaughtered by the wholesale and their scalps sent to this valley for the bounty. He thinks the law should ba revised so as to compelfany one killing animals of this kind and claiming bounty to take them to the cnuaty clerk or a justice of the peace im mediately and prove when, where and by w bourn it was killed. The suggestion is a geod one, as the preeent law only encourages the smuggling traffic and our county exchequer could be crippled by paying bounties on coyote scalps killed in another locality. Last year the state of California paid bounties on U49S coyote scalps, ag gregating the enormous sum of $32,490. They pay only $5 per head; here in the valley they average about $15. The law needs remodeling. HOLIDAY SHOPPERS. Should S tbe Wonderful Array at Johns Qradwohl'a Baiaar.
