A young men's republican club
has been organized at Pendleton.
There are IC1 tax payers of Lane
county who are assessed on
amounts between $")000 and $10,
000. A shortage of not less than $o00
lias been found in ttie account of
the city matshal of Athena.
Ben. Langley, of Eag'e Valley,
Baker county has been awarded a
prize of $100 by a seed man of
Philadelphia, for the ' best potato

The inhabitants of Florence are
having a bread famine. The
steamer Chance with a load of
merchandise for Florence is bar
bound in the Coqnille river, and
the people are out of flour, sugar
and coal oil. Bread is made out
of bran by tl cse who are short.
If there has ever been evidence
of the Willamette valley being
turned into a paradise of fruit
orchards those indications are
now extant. Acre after acre of
the best land is being set to
nurseries, and orchards by the
score are being set to trees this
winter, and spring will find many
more fields of five to twenty acres
of the choicest land set to fruit
trees.
Quite a number of counterfeit
half dollars are in circulation in
Washington county, especially in
the neighborhood of Glencoe, one
merchant there having taken in as
many as six in a day. The
counterfeits are a very poor imita
tion, having a slick greasy feeling,
being ot light weight and
having no "ring," yet it seems that
they are good enough to deceive a
great many. It if thought the
counterfeits are made in the neigh
borhood. The giving way of the heavy
kitchen, roof at the state insane
asylum, at Salem Tuesday came
near proving fatal to a number of
the patients ami attendants.
Among the injured were: Susan
Anderson, left leg broken; James
Stewart, knee hurt; Charles
Moonhan, shoulder injured;
Thomas Finn, Larry Murphy and
Tom Moffitt were also slightly
bruised. Contractors were raising
the roof to make additions and
improvements to be made to ex
tend over the kitchen, when some
timber gave way and the roof came
crashing down. The roof was
twisted oat of all shape and will
to be rebuilt. The damage will
amount to little less than $1000.
A Defeetlv Law.
A correspondent of the Corvallis
Times calls attention to a law on
our statute which provides for the
payment of bounties on certain
kinds of wild animal scalps. The
intention of the law is all right,
but the danger lies in the fact
that it is only a short distance
across the mountains to where
coyotes are plentiful and they
could easily be slaughtered by the
wholesale and their scalps sent to
this valley for the bounty. He
thinks the law should ba revised
so as to compelfany one killing
animals of this kind and claiming
bounty to take them to the cnuaty
clerk or a justice of the peace im
mediately and prove when, where
and by w bourn it was killed. The
suggestion is a geod one, as the
preeent law only encourages the
smuggling traffic and our county
exchequer could be crippled by
paying bounties on coyote scalps
killed in another locality. Last
year the state of California paid
bounties on U49S coyote scalps, ag
gregating the enormous sum of
$32,490. They pay only $5 per
head; here in the valley they
average about $15. The law needs
remodeling.
HOLIDAY SHOPPERS.
Should S tbe Wonderful Array at Johns
Qradwohl'a Baiaar.
Mr. Julius Gradwohl, the enter
prising proprietor of the Bazaar
store in this city, which contains
the largest and best selected stock
of crockery, glass and other wares
for domestic use, in the valley, as
well as fancy wares, toys and
beautiful holiday goods, has re
plenished and enlarged his entire
stock and now has a store that is
a credit to himself and an orna
ment to the city. His shelves,
counters and every available space
are filled with the choicest and
most varied stock of goods ever
Been in this valley, including a
mammoth display of holiday
goods. He has added a new line
which consists of a beautiful as
sortment of rolled gold jewelry
warranted to wear as good as gold
and costing one-tenth as much
money, diamond cut pins, rings,
fine umbrel'as for holiday presents
and novelties. His stock is now in
and holiday shoppers Bbould lose
no time in seeing his wonderful
array which is not surpassed by
any on the coast either inelegance
or prices.
He also carries a gigantic stock
of lieautiful hanging lamps, stand
lamps, bicycles, tricycles, safeties
and velocipedes, which he guaran
tees to sell as low as any place in
Oregon.
Ilia assortment of fine teas and
coffees is always complete, as well
as a general stock of family
groceries. He l.uys his goods
direct for net cash and sells them
the same way.
