The last report of the Minnesota State Food and Hairy Commission contains the details of the state chemists' experiments and anal ysis to determine t he strength and keeping qualities of the various baking powders. Samples of thei numerous brands on sale iu this state were purchnsed and first analy.'d to ascertain their leaven ing "pnver. The lioyal Inking powder is shown bv the tests of both state analysts, l'rof. l'.bernian and l'rof. Hrew, to contain the r. real est amount of leavening gag of the cream of tartar powdeis thus purchased and tested. Hence this powder is officially ranked at the bead of the list. 1 he report attaches great impor tance to series of uxpeiiineiits made to astertain the character, efliciency and keeping qualities of the powders. I'.aking powders that vary in strength or that read ily lose strength before use, are unreliable and wili not give even results; besides it is an indication of the use in their compounding of improper ingredients. These tests were applied to a large num ber of samples of dill'erent nges of the three cream of taitar powders best known in Minnesota. They showed the strength or leavening power of the Koyal very much greater than that of the others. The uniformity of strength of all the samples of Koyal tested was remarkable. Its leavening power was practically unimoaired even in the oldest specimens. The dif ference in the amount of leavening gaa in uuierent samples cl both the oth-r brands was so great as to seriously impair their useiu!-Ms-i in baking. As much as 24 per cent. Ions was found in sam ples a few mouths old. All the samples of Koyal examined by Hr. I M ew w ere r.-ir trfil of satisfactory strength and quality. Iioney, t ite senator from Marion county, w ho is a d i i'i.'-in-the-wool lepuli liean, and well aiiUaiutetl with the political outlook in Oregon. Concerning the congressional nomination in the western district, Mr. I.ooney said : ''Hernial, n is, of eourse, after it. He may not have said so pub licly, but I guess that he will be in the tield. Hon. II. II. Miller is also a candid tt". Hermann is go irg to be a hard miu to beat. Hut then tha republicans recog nize tiie fact that it is a good thing to have men charged once in a whik. They become aciiiainted, b it too well aopaiuled, with the w ires. "Now, although n-er has not yet declared himself on the ijues lioii, 1 would not be surprised if ho should fix up some kind of a deal with Miller by which one or the other secured the nomination on the republican ticket. Then there is an election for goverie r of the state in two years. The election for representative comes oil in June, the legislature meets in January, 1S!)3, and the election for governor is in the fol lowing year. With these stirring political events, tleer can keep sufficiently in the swim. In a word, he might attempt to eecure the republican nomination for governor. Hut then, I think this hardly probable. The nomination for governor on this ticket will more than likely be given to l'oit lainl. liter is playing a sly game of some kind." "And, senator, what are the democrats going to do throughout all this?"' "Ah, yes! the democrats! Well. I am afraid the democrats will not carry the western district. Hut the democrats have some good nen down the valley. There is Jell' Myers," and a merry twinkle played around the sena tors eyes, "and th re is Hob Miller,"' with a s d't and quiet smile. " l'ho democrat who is really an able man, one who would do justice to the state, is J. K. eatherf jiii, ol Albany. He would make a good governor, or a good representative. And he could poll the full democratic vote in the valley. He is an at torney of ability." Mr. Loonev said he was not a candidate for any iiominatijii. Suicide of a Veteran. K.u-ine, I lee. 22.
