Naturally we, as a nation, have great interest in our neighbor on the north, for our safety and pro gress in a measure depends upon them. We have referred hereto fore to the position taken by l'rof. Goldwia Smith. The Chicago Inter-Ocean says that 1'rofessor Gold win Smith has made an elo quent plea before a Canadian audience for unlimited commer cial reciprocity, to be followed by political union, with United States. Simultaneously a counter-proposition was made by the Tories oi the Dominion for enlarging its re sources and increasing its popula tion by diverting European immi grants from our Northwestern States and territories to the British provinces. These things signify dissatisfaction with existing in Canada, and yet the condition of Canada can be considered a un satisfactory only in comparison with that of the United States, or because of the close neighborhood of the two countries. Munufacluii g is certainly a small part of our in dustries now, and is des'ined to be for some time to come." Mr. Maopieary must have had limited opportunities to investigate the subject he discusses si glibly or he would not have made- the extraordinary blunder of stating that manufacturing is a small part of our industries. Evidently he derived his information from text books published before l.0. It was the fashion in antebellum days to say that this was not a manufacturing country and could not hope to be, but if Mr. Mac queary will consult recent statis tics he will discover that the United States is the foremost manufacturing nation of the world. As for his statement that there are able thinkers among the protec ti)niU who do not believe that ttie United States is or ought to be a manufacturing country, it is too preposterously absurd to deserve comment. There is not an in telligent protectionists in this country who does not lirmly be lieve that in the near future we shall supply ourselves with every manufactured article we require and have plenty to spare to sell t other nations not capable to mak ing for themselves. The Rev. Macqueary may know how to preach, but he is as ignorant on the subject of political economy as a Hottentot. At cloth and plush V ask all world, to have developed r gricul- tare in despite of a somewhat in hospitable climate, and to have made a good start toward manu facturing prosperity, are achieve ments of which any people in a colonial stage may be proud. That Canada's debt is unduly large is due in part to official corruption but far more to rash expenditures made in a patriotic, but elusive, hop of rivaling its richer neighbor. The Canadian Pacific road may be instanced as a great undertakirg projected long before it was needed. But, whatever the causes of dis satisfaction may be, Canada is without success. But one bottle restless and desirous for change of oi Dr. .Miles' Nervine caused sound Full to llu Our luty. Eveibodv has at times failed l do their duty towards themselves, Hundreds of lady readers sutler from sick headache nervousness sleeplessness and female troubles, Let tin-in follow the example of Mrs. II. llerhechter, Stevens l'oin, Wis., who for five years sutlered greatly from Nervous Pro stration anu sleeplessness, trieil phvsicans and dillcrent medicines condition. One party seeks atlsr improvement by means of un limited commercial reciprocity with us. Another desires com plete political union with us, and this is the most f ggreseive and progressive party in the Dominion. Another desires separation from Bri ian and national existence as an independent republic. Another leeks for still closer connection wit Britain, as a member of a great federation of colonies and empire the colonies having representation in the Imperial parliament, and all members of the federation having free trade with each other, and protection as against the rest of the world. What w ill come out of this chaos of opinion no one know s. But one of the things possible to - come out ( it is a demand for political nnion with us. Unlimited commercial reciprocity ha idly could exist without political union. Less than unlimited reciprocity, accompanied by uniform tariff restrictions, would be of more harm than good to the United States. We have tried limited reciprocity, and have been aban doned it on proof of its inutility. Political union with Canada would not be free from serious draw backs. In a large part of Canada a. Language foreign to America is Spoken. Its natives cling to that language, and their modes of life are more foreign to Americans than their language. They '.he as their ancestors lived two hundred years ago, ami they resent etlorts toward change. As Cana la is too large for admission as one s'aic, several states would have to be carved out of it, and Quebec would be one of them. We should have senators and representatives in congress who could not speak or read our language. The assuiup tion or adjustment of the Canada debt would be a serious ta-k. At present, political union with Can ada is bat a hope or a dream ; but it is a hope or a dream at least as ardently indulged on the northern as on tli is side of the border. leep every night and she is feeling uke a new perron.
