A fire at 10 o'clock last night at Marcus station, about fifteen milea from this city on the Knights Landing railroad, totally destroyed a large barn and contents, including 27 bead of horses nd mules, 120 tons of hay, and about 50 tons of barley. It may be truthfully said the news from the famine stricken districts of Russia does n it in the least de gree detract from the horrors of the condition that now confronts thousands upon thousands of the czar's subjects. No'nidy can esti mate the number of deaths that will result from s ar vat ion and cold during the c ming winter. The famine comprises a section ot the empire equalling in size near ly half the area of the United States. Its ixjju'ation is mote than our million souls. In m inv of the dis'eicts no winter sowing whatever lias been done ; and con sequently the inhabi'ants have nothing to look forward to, or hope that they will be able to exist through the winter. The govern ment, is taking most energeth measures to help the sutJ'eieis, and it is believed that under the new central famine committer, of which the czarowith is president, the inethoJs of relief will be more -ye'eniatic and effectual. A dispatch was received here front Pekin which confirms the statement that well armed bands have devastated a w hole di-trict in the northern part of China, ai.d that they have pil laged and burned the Delgian mis sion stations. In addition to the destruction of mission etations at Tayou and Sanchi, thee were over 100 -converted natives lwssacred by the b'ood-Lirsty bands. The elation at (iehol was sacked ami burned. The priest in charge of the mission, a Belgian by birth, was kil'el bv the mob, and several other Cli! istians were abo massa creil. The natives have heretofore been quiet, ami there was no sign in tho district that a revolt was meditated. The lo-al authorities have taken no steps to suppress any outbreak, and when the natives rose they met with no m i tenal opposition, for the ollicia's were practically helpless. It may here be stated the local governor, in his report of the oc '.urreiice to the Pekin government, does not place the blame upon the natives of the province, but attaches the responsibility for tho crimes to bands of Mongolian robbers, who he says, made a raid through the district. Whatever the truth may be, the general government has taken steps to prevent any further outrages on foreigners or na'ive Christians in this district. 1'itder orders from Pekin, all the troops available were, immediately on receipt of information regarding the troub'e, dispatched to the scene of the disturbances.
