ad 40 years, living about four
miles south of here, is the end of a
chapter of fatalities which is out
of the usual run. Ten eeks ago

expli sives in twenty-eight holes
dug in Mr. .Sloan's garden, in the

Mitchell street. The plat was
25x40 feet and the holos were two
feet deep. In each was one-fourth
of a small-si. ;d dynamite cartridge
with about an ounce of Jiuis' ii
powder. Attached to an electric
fuse, these rartiidjes, planted two
feel d- ep, wereexp'oded bv means
of a w ire communicating w ith a

whole surface of the ground ap
peared to be lilted two or three
feet, while a few small clods sailed

When the smoke cleared awav
it was found that the ground was
broken to the depth of thirty
inches at the points of explosion
