A break occurred in lite great pumps hat cast out tnouaands of gallons of water from the Leggetts creek coal mine, and the mine began to flood, iifty miners hurried to reach the carriage which conveys them to the surface, but found that their avenue of escape had b.eh cut off. When near the top of the shaft car of coal which was being aken out bad rolled from the car riage aud fallen hundreds of feet. The carriage, freed of its burden, had rueued to me top 01 tne snail and had become immovable in the tower. The onlv way to reach the sur face was to face the raging waters, pass through them and reat h the narrow.' pasage way w hich led to the shaft of the Van Storch mine. The miners waded in water, which grew deeper at every step Foon it reacned tneir knees then their hips and then their shoulders, but still they went on. To turn back meant death ; ahead was the hope of safety. For 1000 feet the man trudged on, with the water up to their necks. Soon they were coaaptlled to throw their heads sideways wiih one ear in the sulphur water and occaeional'y gulping it in as they breathed. Still they stead ily strove to reach safety. John Jor.es, a Welsh miner, finally de spaired and asked the others to go on and leave him to perish, but they would not and assisted him along. The conduc tors and brakeman have several grievances against the load, and among other things demand an increase of wages and a reduction in the number of hours.
