A Mew Industry for Linn County.
S. S. Endicott has this week
presented us with a sample of tiue
sorguum. it was manufactured
from the sugar cane raised by Dr.
H. A. Davis as an experiment,
savs the Harrisbu-g Courier. The
syrup is somethiiig extia tine. It
is of a lich amber color, yet so
clear and clean that when place t
in a gl 4 as j r you can rend a news
paper through it. This is a new
entrpiise with Mr. Dtvis, but. to
see it is to conclude that i: will be
a success. The docsor has quite a
patch of cane and though it was
planted nearly two months later
than it should have been, he will
get not less than 110 gallons of
syrup. He will next year put in
several acres which is evident
proof that he is confident it will
be a satisfactory inves.mcnt.
There is rojm in this valley for
this production on a large fccale,
and there is a good mirket for all
that can be produced. 'There is
reason to bel'cve that this soil and
climate is will adapted to its pro

Nov. 14. The bark Sarah, 114J
tons, belonging to Yarmouth, N.
S., left Manilla September 20 in
ballast, bound for Port Towr.seml.
She had fair weather up to the
latter part of the trip. It was
plowing hard and very fogy,
when on Sunday night the bark
struck on Pachena point, twenty
five miles south of this place. A
very heavy sea was running and
it was blowing bard. Ten of the

crew landed in a boat that night
and the balance etuck by the ship
until morning, when all but two
got safely ashore. Ten of the
crew in a boat pulled forCarm
iiiiah light, which they reached at
8 a. m. Monday. The captain's
wife and baby were aboard the
vessel and were safely landed.
Two sailors, named Kerr and Mor
ris, were drowned. They were on
bo nd the bark wheu she broke up.
The vessel is a total loss. Captain
Greeuhalgh, wife, child and five
hands are at a tt ore about four
ii.iies down the coast, and the res
cuing steamer Mystery has pro
ceeded there to get them. It is
not thought anything of the vessel
oan be savel. Ttie crew saved
nothing but what they stand in.

Mr Dakin and family, keepers of
the Cariuiiiah lighthouse.

rant of Bit-foot's band of Indian,
numbering some sixty families, are
in open revolt against the author
ity of the agent at the Cheyenne
ag- ncy. This band of Indians
have been living n ceded lands.
No Indian can live off the recurva
tion wi'hout taking land in sever
alty, and declaring hia intention of
becoming a citizen. McKean went
up to allot thesa Indians land.
When he g it there he found they
had a few days before cold iff ail
their stock, lacked up, and left
camp. He notiliid the agent, who
dispatched half a dozen Indian
jHiiice after them, and to bring
them hack to the reservation.
They overtook the band near the

deavor d to persuade them to re
turn. All but one of them refused

Ridge agency to reside there in

returned to the agent and when
McKean left he had dispatched a
big foroe of Indian police to brioa
them back without fail.
