That there has been a vast im provement in the business opeia tiona of the country :e apparent, and money matters are in a better shape. I.rudstreet fays some of the generally current i.nt:c'.pations in regard to the workings of the money market during the autumn may be premature. It must be admitted that aa yet the move ment of fpnda to the west and the demand created by the harvesting and shipping of the crops, as well aa by growing activity of trade throughout the agricultural regions which is the result of these devel opments, are increasing rather than abat'ng, with a rat m at effect upon the general money market. But, on the other hand, in spite of the How of funds to the West which in the course of the past month baa reduced the Some one raises the query why! steel rails are cheaper in England j than here, and why the price has been lowered there. In ex plana- . - . r I.l tion the following irom an Eng lish journals is given : A meeting f the South Wales and Monmouthshire Steel -workers and Mechanics' Midinir Scale As sociation was held at Merthyr on Tuesday (September 2Uth), The The award of the auditors Mr. Kirk of Leeds, for the employers, and Mr. Parsons, Newport, for the workmen for the three months em ling August 31st was opened, and the result was found to bo a declaration of a reduction in the rate of waes of !) per cent on the three months ending December olst next. Three reductions had had previously been dc clared this year, viz , 2,1.. per cent in January, 1 per cent taking effect in April and 5 per cent in August, making with this last award a total reduc tion in the wages rate of 17'.. per cent in the twelve months. Of coursa, the reductions have followed the decline in prices. (Juite a reduction in the price of labor, and perhaps if such a cut ting down process was adopted here a decline in prices might be made also. WE HAVE NOT AN- PlAINFIKLD ! It will probably act as a solace to the nerves of thesmokcrs to know that they can have no assurance against smoking a Chin ese made article even in purchas ing the higher priced brands. In all probability, sometime in the course cf human events, some persons will become tiied of pro mulgation the false clia.ge thtt the Mcrvnley bill will not sell a pound of pork or a barrel of flour for the farmer, when they look over the tables showing in created exports of those articles to the countries sur-'witli vrlncli we have concluded Dress Goods, Fancy Goods Underwear Hosiery, Etc. RAILROAD Aire CAJLjL -A-ILTID sums THE VERMJAY PRESS CJnequaled for fast work and light draft. Manufactured at the foot of Baker Street, Albany, by PRICE & VERNON. ALLEN BROTHERS, plus reserves of New York barks from about (16,000,000 to little more than $3,000,000, the New York markets has bsen. especially since October 1, s;ngo'arly free from symptoms of active pressure, such aa would encourage the idea of stringent condition later on. It may be claimed that the marked chilling off of speculative "boom" has not been without effect in this connection, and that the prospect, for some time at least, that the stock markets will remain upon a moderate level of activity, is cal culated to increase confidence in the stability of the mocey market The actual workings of the market and the current rates shew, it is true, no material change from the conditions which prevailed during the past two or three months. I tie most noteworthy feature is still the very limited amount of money that is being offered on time, and the presence of a fair demand for such accommodation at full 6 per cent rates, even on an unexceptionable quality of colla teral, nor does there teem to be any relaxtion of the narrow condi tions which have frequently noted in regard to mercantile discounts. Tile limited demand for accom modation in that direction natur ally prevents the situation from exercising as yet any marked re strictive intluence upon the general VoluAie of trade, but it is note worthy that at the outset of developments which promise to have such a favorable effect upon manufacturing industries and general business the money mar ket should offer so little encourage ment to increase activity in that direction. The most important . 1 I .1 " . " teaiure, uowever, oi me existing situation is the continuance of gold imports. From September 1 when the movement began, up to date, receipts of specie from Eu rope have amounted to $12,177, 000. while nearly $5,120,000 are still in transit. The past week, it is true, has seen a slight diminu tion in the volume vi the (ship ments, which is accounted for by the somewhat disturbed condition of European fiancee, and particu larly 1 the general anticipation of a further advance in the Bank oi.bngianu discount rate. i:umors which prevailed that the Bank of England would make an advance in its rate ol discount, for the pur pose of checking the outtlow of gold to this country, were, how ever, not, substantiated, tnd in fact the bank failed to make any charge in its figure, which, for the present at leaf t, reaiaius at o per cent. This action, however, must be considered as temporary. The heavy loss of specie which the bank has sustaiued in the past few weeks, and the certainly that the continental financial centers will continue their efforts to d'w gold for shipment to this country instead shipping it from their own reserves make an advance in the open market at London an ulti mate necessity. rec:procity treaties.
