NATURAL RELATIONS OF EUROPE AND AMERICA The opinion has been prevalent among scientific men that at some time the continents of Europe and America wete joined together by continuous land connection. Not only are these opinions upheld by such myths as the story of the lost continent Atlantis, but by still more tenable theories of a con nection in the northern islands. Upon this theory Public Opinion gives a translation from a French paper which asks the question is America really a new world, that is to say a distinct continent? Was it not formally a part of the old one? Mr. A. Blancbard believes that the New World was an in tegral part of the old one, at a com paratively recent period. In a remarkable article in the Revue Scientifiijue entitled 'The terres trial comnipnications between the continents during the modern age of the earth," he explains the reasons for this opinion. If we follow a line drawn from the Islands north of Scotia ad to the Faroe Islands, f-om these to Ice land, from Iceland to Greenland, from Greenland to Labrador, crossing Iavis Strait which is full of islands, both large and small, we will fid ,a chain of lauds, broken only by spaces of sea not very wide, and, in certain straits, of quite shallow depth. These detachments of the soil, these erosions show a disjoining of lands which were united in former epochs, when animal nature wis already the same as that which still exists in our times. Mr. Blanchard notices the quan tity and the quality of the veget ables and animals found in both Eu rope and America. Several ane mones of the north of Europe are found mixed with the vegetation of North America. There are also dif ferent cruciferse, viotanceir, several pieces of stitchwort of the cary ophylIace:', the rosacf u-, etc. The families of the scrophalariacie, the labiafcr, boraginace;e and the genteans are also represented by identical species in the new world. There are also numerous families of insects found in Arctic regions of both Europe and America. The coleoptera-, insects generally stationary, and possessing powers cf locomotion too feeble to enable them to cross the sea, have three to four hundred species common to both continents. Careful re search will be able to discover, in certain American fauna similar te the European, local varieties of the same species. In proof of his proposition, Mr. Blanchard re minds us still further that crea tures incapable of great removals, such as the spiders of the Arctic and Alpine regions, have been found in Greenland. Among the vertebra-, the common weasel, martin and ermine of the cold countries of Europe, are also found in North America. The beaver is till a very characteristic type, The difference: which the old naturalists point out between the beaver of Europe and that of America, are very superficial, and for real zoologists, only signs of the simple local varieties. The lemming of No-way and the variable, must have followed the same wanner as the preceding animals in spreading from one continent to the other. The fresh water fish of North America, as a total, are very characteiistic of a ingle region of the globe. They must, however have derived from certain European species. Albany's tire department is as efficient as any in the Northwest. A representative team from this city carried away more money in prizes from the Victoria tourna ment than any other team, sae one. The fire lads made a good record. A good fire department is worth millions to any thriving ciiy, and the people of Albany appreciate the value of theirs. Ti: s Salem street car line does not seem to be paying well There is talk: of a receiver being appointed, and the company is two months behind with the pay ment of their employes. This after the great throng at the state fair, does not look well for the growing capital city of Oregon. It is doubtless due to bad management.
