The Grain Harvest In France. Paris, Oct. 2. An offic'al esti mate of the yield of harvest for 1891 is as follows : Wheat.81.8S. 000 hectolitres, (a hectolitre is two and three-quarter bushels ; mixed cram, 3,U37,UJu hectolitres ; rye. 21,152,000 hectolities. A Mysterious Explosion. A mysterieus accident occured at Monmouth, Polk county Thurs day, in which the 12 year old daughter of W. H. Parrish", a pro minent physician of that place, was seriously injured. While ehe was sitting near an open fireplace a terrible explosion occured in the fire, tilling the room with the debris. The noie soon biought a crowd of people to the spot, ami when the excitement had subsid ed, it was found that the little girl's lower libs were litteray filled wi h what was at first suippomd to be shot from a cartridge. Dr. Parrish, however, could find no shot in the wounds, nor could the least vestige of any explosion lie found in the fireplace. Ia er in the day some small metallic frag ments, resembling brass, were re moved from the wounds. What the explosion was or how it got in the fire, is wholly a mystery. It broke out before 1 o'clock in the Merlin plauing mill. on Taylor's wharf, near the Canard wharves. In a few minutes the place was all ablas, and the fire spread rapidly. A gentle breeze from the north carried bowers of lire spwrtote- thm biilsf, vea scla and wharves rath of the fire, The whole department was called o it, and engines from Dartmouth cime over to render assistance, Within ai hour Merlin's mill. Wil son's hlacasmith shop, John Tay lor A Co. 'a big fish warehouse filled with pickled fish, Brookfield Bros lumber warehouse end yards, and Taylor A Brookfield'e w harves were destnyed. By this time the fire had spread to Liver pool wharf on the north and burn ed out Butler's spar yard, B. Swenerton, miller's agent, Halifax broom factory, J. B. NeiHey A Co.. commission merchants, and Strat ford Bros . oil dealers. Large quantities of petro'enm were stored on this wharf and there were great tears oi an explosion. 1 his was prevented by ro'ling the nil into the dock. The fire spread simul taneously to the south wharf, and soon the immense fish warehouses of John Tayior A Co. were a prey to tne names. J tie loss will be heavy. As it happened Birch had his rifle with him, and he waited un til the bears were within easy range when he fired, resulting in shooting the largest one through the head, killing him instantly. At the report from the rifle the other one ran back into the brush and escaped. That evening before retiring Mr. Birch built a gun trap, and placed the carcass of a dead sheep upon it, with the in tention of cap'urmg the other bear. 'About midnight Bitch was awakened by the reort of a gun. He got up, and going out to the trap, he found the other liear ly ing on the ground with a built t hole through his head.
