THE OEEQOH EDIT0E9, Hew Machinery Sow on ths Wy Programme of the Annual Convention to Ooatlsok Ver? Encouraging. PlaVs and specilicaticns of the AlbanV Mining t!t Milling Com pany's ew quartz mill, which was shipped on ttie steamcship WilliametVe Valley and arrived at laquma jBotnfay, are to be seen in the oflice ci the secretary, J. V Pipe, in this citv. It isa complete plant and will Cvst when ready for work in the mines between $25,0;)0 and $30,000. It is a ten stamp mill, each stan p weighing S50 pounds, and its capacity is .ii) tons per dav. The mill and machinery will go direct to Gatesvi'le, and from there will he hauled to the mines on wagons, the contract having been let to B. M. Huston & Co., of this city. I he company already has a small mill and ret rt, and a saw mill, driven by a 40-horie power engine, now in operation at the mines. It will require about a nionth to get the new mill into the mines. In the meantime the company is working three shifts of men night and day, running : lower tunnel in on the ledge A good many thousand tons of ore is in sight ready lor work, i tin t v tons of ore that will be crushed in a day will be reduced to ab-iut three tons of concentrates which will be shipped to the smelting works, probably to San b ranoseo, or the Linnton works. The gold from the plates will of course be reduced at the mines. The com pany has had accurate tests made of the ore. and know wnat thev are doing. Thev have enough paying ore in sight to justify this outlay, and before anyone hardly realizes it a big mining industry will be in ope-ation at our very door. Other companies are arranging to put in machinery to work their mines in the same district, lue Albany Mining & Milling Co., has erected a two story boarding house and has sawed over 100,000 feet of lumber for other buildings at the mines, so it can bo readly seen that a thriving camp is already spring ing up in the Santiain district. Sscle. The Hkiialo is pleased to note that its suggestions as to the necessity for decisive action on the part of the city authorities to en lorce sewer connections made, have been acted upon by the city council. The pro eedings of the council as published this morning show that the city proposes .now to compel property owners to make such connections immediately, and in case of further refusal to do o the city will doit, and make the same a lien upon the property. This if as it should be. Coroner and, Engineer netting at the Facts in the Case, The coroner was satisfied that some cne was to blame. It might be the railroad company; it might be the engineer; u might be the conductor ; it might be the doad man. That was what the coroner proposed to find ou and being fully impressed rt ith the gravity oi the occasion he arose from bis seat, struck an easy attitude with one hand resting on the table, and looking at the engineer over the top of his glasses said with some severity : "You were running pretty fast?" The engineer in the witness chair didn't seem to be at all dis turbed. He crossed his legs, leaned back in the chair ami an swered carelessly : "We were making pretty fair time." "Kunniug faster than usual?' "Some. We were behind time." "Making fifty miles an hour?" The engineer was cautious. He knew the speed was limited when running through certain towns on the road. "Well, I wasn't keeping time," he said : "Was the bell tinging and whistle sounding?' "I suppose so. That was lireuian's business." "Dida't you hear it? ' "No, I wasn't listening." The coroner let that pass and squared himself for the last attack. "Did you see the man?" he asked, shooting a finger out in the direction of tne engineer. The engineer looked at the linger a moment and blamllv said: "What man?" "The dead man, tir, the dead man. Don't tritle. "Oh, yes, I saw him." "Now, sir, be careful what you say. lake plenty of time to think." lfie coroner was most impressive When and where did you first see him : ine engineer pulled ins mus tache thoughtfully for a moment. 'ion want me to be exact?" he asked. 'I do." lt s pretty hard to estimate distance, you know." Of courde ; but a great deal de pends on it in this case. Do the best you can." ine engineer puued mueiache a little more. Then he said ; 'I won't be sure as to a foot one way or the other, but my best estimate would be that when I first saw him he was four mid a half feet above the smokestack.. the the the be Held at Aitoiia This Week.
