A gng of Italians worked under light of electricity all night at the scene of disaster at l'ark 1'l.ice. Progress was slow, owing to the immense amount of debris overturned near Wall. The first discovery, made at 5:oJ this in ii niiig, was that of (he body of a man bioned beyond it cognition. At 7 : 4'J the body of an Jliier man was brought out and a few minutes later that of a boy. The latter waa burned terribly ab nit the face and arms. The man had been fearfully crushed, his intestines protruding in a way eickening tt see. At 8: 30 the re mains of a man with bia legs burned oil" were found. At !l o'clock another man's body was discovered and recognized as that of John Stemke, of Jersey City. At t : 5) a young man's body was found, making the twenty-fourth victim discovered. The body of Ernest H. Shaddock, of Brooklyn, was found. An Ital ian working in the ruins was eeen M take something from the body f a victim. When the presidents proclamation is issued throwing tbe lands open for settle ment there will be a scramble al most equal to that which took place on the opening of Oklahoma. Every conceivable specimen of hu manity has put in an Appearance, fhe gambler and the missionary elbow each otber equally anxious to be among tbe tirst when tbe order for the invasion is proclaim ed. Some have gone so far as to Luild Hat boats with which to cross the streams, others nave bouses on wheels stocked with pro visions ready to move at a mo ment's notice. On a line which ex tends from the Cimmarron to the South Canadian, a d e'ance of sixty miles or more, are camped a thousand homeless persons anx b usly awaiting the president's proclamation. BENEATH TUE WAVES. Another Surf Batber Swims to Eternity, New York, Aug. 24. Herbert Mapes, the famous college athlete, was drowned before his mother's eyes while bathing in tbe surf al Fire island yesterday. There were several bathers in the water when Mapes, accompanied by his brother Dr. Charles J. Mapes, Dr. Strat ford and Frederick Cheseliorough, a college mate, plunged into the breakers for a swim. Being aa ex cedent swimmer, he at once struck out beyond the breakers, and was soon separated from his companions. The first warning of danger came from Mrs. Mapes, who was watching him from the beach. Her cries drew the atten tion of the other bathers to the young man. He was struggling violently as though be had been attacked by cramps. His shoaU could not be heard above the roar of the waves, but he waa signaling frantically for help with his arm. At once all was excitement aad confusion. Half a dozen brave swimmers started to Mapes' assist ance. Twice the young man was carried under by the waves when he reappeared on the surface. The second time it was seen that he was completely exhausted. Tbe would-be rescuers redoubled their efforts, but before the nearest was within a score of yards, Mapes disappeared fer the last time. The Arctic steamer Kite baa arriv ed with reports of interesting ex periences in Greenland which in clude a struggle of three weeks with icebergs in Melville bay, dur ing which period she made only 100 miles. Lieutenant Peary, his wife and five associates were landed ia Mc cormick bay, Murchison sound. Whale sound, his original destina tion, was frozen over and inacces sible. W hile in Melville bay Peary broke his leg, but Dr. Cook decided that tbe occurrence need not inter fere with the expedition, as be would probably be as well as ever in three month's time. On July 16th the Kite waa nearly lost. She got ripped between two flies. All hands were put to work and by digging and blasting; the vessel a8 saved trom destruction. Since the lynching at New Orleans, many Italians have returned to their native country from the United States, and in some localities their presence has caused a serious over stocking of tbe labor market. With a view ot relieving this congestion, Premier Rudini some time aco sounded Lord Salisbury on the question whether Australia would not be a good place for tbe settle ment of Italian immigrants. It was thought that possibly the Aus tralian local government might offer some inducements for tbe im migration of Italians who could be proved to possess some meansand to be of good character . The Brit ish government sent inquiries on the subject to the Australian authorities and has received re s ponces which will hardly be wel come news to the Italian premier.
