New YoitK, Aug. 24. A gng of
Italians worked under light of
electricity all night at the scene of
disaster at l'ark 1'l.ice. Progress
was slow, owing to the immense
amount of debris overturned near
Wall. The first discovery, made
at 5:oJ this in ii niiig, was that of
(he body of a man bioned beyond
it cognition. At 7 : 4'J the body of
an Jliier man was brought out and
a few minutes later that of a boy.
The latter waa burned terribly
ab nit the face and arms. The
man had been fearfully crushed,
his intestines protruding in a way

mains of a man with bia legs

o'clock another man's body was
discovered and recognized as that
of John Stemke, of Jersey City.
At t : 5) a young man's body was
found, making the twenty-fourth
victim discovered.
The body of Ernest H. Shaddock,
of Brooklyn, was found. An Ital

waa bold for trial. Atthe morgue
i here was a constant stream of
people looking for their friends or
relatives among the dead. A sick

pervades tbe atmosphere. It is
now thought that the faulty con

cause of the accident.
l'y noon two rnjie bo lies were
found. So far only the edge of the

Late this evening six more

Three were identified by friends.

BENEATH TUE WAVES.
Another Surf Batber Swims to
Eternity,
New York, Aug. 24. Herbert
Mapes, the famous college athlete,
was drowned before his mother's
eyes while bathing in tbe surf al
Fire island yesterday. There were
several bathers in the water when
Mapes, accompanied by his brother
Dr. Charles J. Mapes, Dr. Strat
ford and Frederick Cheseliorough,
a college mate, plunged into the
breakers for a swim. Being aa ex
cedent swimmer, he at once
struck out beyond the breakers,
and was soon separated from his
companions. The first warning of
danger came from Mrs. Mapes,
who was watching him from the
beach. Her cries drew the atten
tion of the other bathers to the
young man. He was struggling
violently as though be had been
attacked by cramps. His shoaU
could not be heard above the roar
of the waves, but he waa signaling
frantically for help with his arm.
At once all was excitement aad
confusion. Half a dozen brave
swimmers started to Mapes' assist
ance. Twice the young man was
carried under by the waves when
he reappeared on the surface. The
second time it was seen that he
was completely exhausted. Tbe
would-be rescuers redoubled their
efforts, but before the nearest was
within a score of yards, Mapes
disappeared fer the last time. His
body has not yet been recovered.

THE ABCTIO REGIONS.
A Three Weeks Straffl In tbe
Frozen Regions--Blasting; Baveet
the Vessel.
St. Joun's, N. F., Aug. 24.
The Arctic steamer Kite baa arriv
ed with reports of interesting ex
periences in Greenland which in
clude a struggle of three weeks
with icebergs in Melville bay, dur
ing which period she made only
100 miles.
Lieutenant Peary, his wife and
five associates were landed ia Mc
cormick bay, Murchison sound.
Whale sound, his original destina
tion, was frozen over and inacces
sible. W hile in Melville bay Peary
broke his leg, but Dr. Cook decided
that tbe occurrence need not inter
fere with the expedition, as be
would probably be as well as ever
in three month's time.
On July 16th the Kite waa nearly
lost. She got ripped between two
flies. All hands were put to work
and by digging and blasting; the
vessel a8 saved trom destruction.
A number of interesting trophies
were secured by explorers.
ITALIAN IMMIGRANTS.
Tbey Are Not Desired by the Aus
tralian Authorities.
LosdoV, Aug. 24. Since the
lynching at New Orleans, many
Italians have returned to their
native country from the United
States, and in some localities their
presence has caused a serious over
stocking of tbe labor market. With
a view ot relieving this congestion,
Premier Rudini some time aco
sounded Lord Salisbury on the
question whether Australia would
not be a good place for tbe settle
ment of Italian immigrants. It
was thought that possibly the Aus
tralian local government might
offer some inducements for tbe im
migration of Italians who could be
proved to possess some meansand
to be of good character . The Brit
ish government sent inquiries on
the subject to the Australian
authorities and has received re
s ponces which will hardly be wel
come news to the Italian premier.
The Australians state Australian
immigration is not favored by tbe
people of that country.
