The Toledo Bee says that "A Royal Pass" is a strong drama, and tjeorge C. Staley, who play. the Swiss i iuide, combines more of the two great fat tors which uo to make an accomplished actor, than most stars now on the stage. The stove foundry at the state penitentiary is shut down lor the annual cleanup, and in conse quence nearly 41K) prisoners art idle. During the shut-down ex tensive repairs will be made to 1 1 it foundry ami a general cleaning will be had all around the premiets. The capacity of the shops is not large enough to give employment to as large a force of men as the state has available for this pur pose. In August when the foundry is reatly to start up, everything about the prison and shops wtll be ioiind in siiip shape. It Wa a Close Call. John Huston, of Shedds, came near losing a band of valuable horses in the river at .Icll'erson last Sunday. They had just en ss ed the bridge when the noon train came up which frightened Un horses and they broke away from the drivers and with a mail rush plunged into the swiftly rushing waters of the Santiam. The cur rent quickly carried them down the stream and by chance they swam across the river where they j stood in a irroup and waited lor the bank to be dug down so they could get out. (Juitea number oi them were badly cut and bruised up by striking on stumps ami roots in their long swim id over one-half mile. I iiceiidiarlaui at Taufcent. About 1 :;0 a. m. Monday inori ing tire was discovered in the rear end of D. Turner's residence in Tangent. Mr. Turner and fainiU were not at borne and a light in the House attracted the attention of Joseph Beard, an.1, on investi gation he found the back door open and a fire burning on the tloor. This was put out with a few buckets oi water. Shavings and clothes i-aturated with kero sene were stiewed about, giving unmistakable siirns that the lire was of incendiary origin. Mill Onlered. C. (J. BurkViart and J. Y. Pipe, who were delegated to g to San Francisco to purchase a new mill for the Albany Mining A Milling Company, have relumed. They carefully investigate.! and selected the best mill with the latent im provements that could be found, and it will be brought on and put into the mines at the earliest practical moment. This marks a decided step in advance in our mining interests add indicates that the Santiam mines are a solid investment. OREGON'S ALPS. A Most D- ii;jhtful Mountain Report of K.isy icctsi. The wealthy r,'g nian, desir-j oils of submitliiig to theextortioiis and obstipiioiisncss of the Alpine guide; oi etidangeiing his. i,eck on the dill's of the Maliei ho.n; and of freezing and spraining his ank les on the Kiione giarh r, must ol ne cessity travel sevt n ti;oii:-a'id miles, for the privilege ol doing these thing'-. The less allhsent citizen can, lor a mere 1 1 i tie, and by journeying one bundled! h part the distance, enjoy the pleasures ot a mountain trip, equally as novel and interesting, amidst the Cascades, as by voyaging to Basle, (ieiieva, or Lucerne. Right within easy reach of Albany is the lovely valley of Klkhoin. This delightful rest for the weary city-worker ; paradise of the disci ples of Izaak Walton, and elyseum of the sportman, will, in a few short years, be effaced by the ever onward toirent of Aiueiicau pro gress. Switzerland the old endures for evei ; its tourist worn crags, aged cities, and sputs of historic renown conjuring up visions of leisler ami William Tell, may be visited and dreamed owr a lifetime hence, when the Switzerland of Oregon shad have faded Horn view lor ever. Then the snotv-capped peaks of .lefi'erson and Hood w ill be sullied by the soot of - thous and factories; the 'ir and fern covered hillsides be bereft i their in iDi !e nf I'leen. and scaled bv cable and elf-trie cais, the smoke and bustle of crowded cities replac ing the mists and stillness oi to day. ilad Longfellow visited the Cas cade mountains ere he gave "Kx celsioi" to.iiie world, the ever on ward banner hearer would have been more patriotically .and ap propriately located amidr-t the Cis alpine scenery ot (.Megon. The Oiegoni.tn schiiulhoy has heard tell ol the Mertle (J lace, but can he locate the Mount 11 ore b oi America'.' We doubt it ; yet from the summit ot this mountain can be viewed a scene unsurpassed for magnificence in any part of the tourist traveled world. The sun rise and mooiirise over old Jell', the aurora boiealic-like sunset over the Coast range, and the like diorama i i the sparkling ami faraway electric lights ot Albany produce an etl'ect v hich has to be seen to be real. zed ami its glories enjoved. Nine snow-capped peaks ami the magnilicent panorama oi a hundred iore.-t bour.d lulls and valleys, cascades and waterfalls add enchantment to the prospect. I'hure. on lloreb may w e enjoy the bine huckleberry least of nature; there also may we slake our thirst and strei.gtlien our inner man with mineral wattr from an icy iron spring, shout the grouse an.i stalk the deer, and on the lirst of August, enj ;v a slide and a snow ball tight. To roll r cks down the mighty canons and listen to tiie marvelous echoes allord amusement and in struction. The ascent of .Mount lloreb is a matter of compara'ive tase, and is frequently accomplish ed on horseback by ladies and children. A month spent amidst the sylvan beauties of the Cascade uioui. tains of Oregon makes us re turn with regret to the business and routine oi city life. A few hours journey on the cush ioned seats ot an Oregon Pacific car will take one to Niagara and from here the summit oi Mount lloieb can be reached with a horse. Th Clever Actor. Mr. (ieorge C. Staley is a versatile and clever actor in the role of Andreas Holler, and in the I several disguises which he assumes in the play; he shows both versa tility and power. His voice is re sonant and ricn ; in action he is conseientioiu and earnest, and throughout, tin? role he is easily and without ellbrt the cynosure oi interest. Mr. Staley certainly has in this play a role admirably adapted to bis ability, and it should bring him financial as well as artistic recompense says the Boston Herald. The coin pany in support is notable for even and uniform strength, and the entire produc'iuii is worthy of the high est success. Flow er of the War. l.elore the war there was no such Mower as the daisv in Vir ginia. The hardy flower was a curiosity. .Now the tielils just around Kichmoiid ar w bite with them. This is especially so of the iate hatllw-lields about the Cbickahomiiiy river, and where ever the federals hid encamp ments. An investigation shows that the f-ced.s of the prolific daisy were brought by the union soldiers in Virginia, when they were camp ed near tie; city. An old battery west oi Richmond is the spot from which the daisy b. gin to spread. Watch For lln-m. Manipulators of gold coin must be on the lookout ior sweated ") and $b) gold ieces. Crop-Weather Bulletin, No. 20 for the week ending, Saturday, July L'.'uli lS'.il. Thursday, the 2:! I was the warmest day on record; the maximum temperature ranged from l'o to Ki.") degrees. The "-'-th and 2 It I. were warm w hile to day is much cooler. On the evening of the 2.M thunder storms were observed in various localities, though liitle rain fell. The hot weather was favorable, to- the ripening of grain but slightly ii.ju: ions lo gardens. When! harve-t is g neially in opcrat.ou and repot ts ind eate busier and more plump trains anil better beads than were ever in tici pated. Oats are t'oing well and ripening rapidly. J i.e coldlin moth is bccoiiiii g danti -rous and doing damage; the apple oop will be poor. Tite hop louse is fairly well under control. Green corn and peaches are ripe and plentiful ; the peach crop is the largest on record. Prunes are generally not over an average crop,- though in Douglas county the trees are heav ily loaded with fruigbt. Hay harvest in sections, continues and all leports indicate heavy yields. In Eastern Oregon the warm weather has brought spring wheat rapidly forward; fall wheat is 'eit-g cut, headt r-! are at wxrk in the Coliimhi.i river valley; in I'niou county and S'.'Uth of tiie Blue mountians the spnug was mure backward and harvest will begin al-out the 10th of August. All reports indicate wheat to be better than was expected; by all odds the grain crop will be the largest ever produced. Reports from the wheal districts of the world, other than the I'nited States, indicate a general de ficiency, this means a demand tor American w heat and good prices. Already there are signs ol in creased prices ami it bids fair to be as high or higher than previous prices, Oregon id to be congratulated on its immense yield and prospective good prices, resulting in prosperous times for the agricu.turist. GATESYILLE ITEMS. At the regular meeting of the Mount Horeb alliance of this place Saturday, eleven new mem bers were initiated and a number of others sent in their application for membership. The members are highly elated at the future prospects. They expect to have between To and 1K) members be iore the end of this quarter. Ben Shepherd, who was taken to Lyons to appear before the justice of the peace of that place on a charge of larceny, has re turned, having proved bis inno cence. T. Henness preferred the charge against Shepherd. Ilei.nesaand Shepherd treated t'.e boys of the Henness mill to a fistic performance some time since, and as Henrc-a came out second best, he hit upon the novel idea of Kjuaring accounts by having Ben arrested on a charge oi nog stealing, putting the county to useless expense, furnish ii g employment for the juetice of the peace at Lyonsville, and lots ot fun for the lawyers. Mr. Fiorer and family started for the alley Sattirdry, to remain until after harvest. Mr, II. O. Benton and wife, of Brunswick, Mo., arrived on to day's tr.t'n, to visit friends at this plat e. We bad quite a ball game here yesterday. Gatesville played against Brown's Mdl. The score stood 10 to 1(1, in favor of Brown's Mill. We understand that the (lales ville boys are going to organize and practice, so as to play the Lyonsville nine in the neat future.
