The word appears to be passed all along the line of the united farmers' alliance to corner the en tire wheat crop of the country says the San Francisco Chronicle. Circulars by the thousand have bten sent into every state in the I'nion where wheat is grown in any quantity, the substance of these circulars being, "Hold your wheat." It makes a world of diil'erence whose ox it is that is gored. If a syndicate of capitalists, foreseeing the shortage in the Russian and Indian wheat crop, had bought up all the wheat in the United States to hold for an advance in price the farmers' alliance would be up in arms, and would denounce fhe exactions and extortions ol capital and condemn the kind of speculation which would take the bread out of the poor man's mouth; but when the farmer themselves see a chance to make a gigantic corner in wheat, "Hold your wheat" becomes the ko'y note of an enlightened gospel and a rule of action which strikes the farmer as representing the purest morality. But without discussing the ethics of the movement, it must strike the stuient of markets that the alliance lias undertaken a very large contract, without ade quate machinery to carry it out. business men and capitalist know the enormous diltieulty of holding a pool together, even when there are but few persons concerned in it and a perfect community of in terest prevails. How much more diflicult, then, will it be maintain a wheat pool composed of all the wheat-growers of the United States, and having no definite organiza tion or prericusly determined plan of operation ? The farmers will nuke money, and of that every one will be glad ; but they will not make so much as tue more sanguiue ot them an ticipate. Some of the hoarded wheat will get away, in one way or another; there will lie leaks here and there, and fiiumci.il ires- sure will compel some of the far mers to let go before the price they hope for is reached. Thev would do better, we think, to take the price which wheat would naturally bring this ear and let corners alone. ii mi vest rnosi'Lcrs, The London Times, commenting upon the harvest prospects of the world, say that in Russia there id a grave deficit, that the peasantry are starving and there is small hope for relief; that in India there is serious anxiety, and famine pre vails over a considerabte portion of the country; that in America the harvest will be good in quality and amount, and that in the chief wheat countries of England, Nor folk and Sutlblk, the crop is above the average and in othei countries up to the average. These statements, made without qualification, doubtless represents the very best and latest informa tion obtainable on the subject. The Times controls very many sources of information and its as sertions may be eet down as )eiug as nearly accurate as possil le. It has been known f ir some time that the Russian wheat crop would be short, but this is, we think, the tirst positive statement regaiding the the condition of the crop in India. It is erident that this condition of atlairs must prove of great bene fit to Itie American wheat grower. No matter how good the crops may be iu Norfolk or Suli'ulk, or in other Euglish countries, the entire product cannot be enough to sup ply brjad to the United "Kingdom, and wheat must be imported to supply the deficiency. With short J crops of Russian and Indian w heat the only available source of supply must be the United States and Canada, ami of this supply the United States must furnish far the greater part. This is certain to be a good year for the American wheat farmer, and will not need to enter into any combinations to advance the price of his product. The hunger of Europe will be certain to do that for him. Tiii.no have reached such a pass in Tennessee that the gov ernor has decided to call a special session of the legislature to take action regarding the convict lease svstem. It is likely that the new law will be very much modified, if not entirely repealed. The plan of putting confict labor into open and direct competition with free labor never has succeeded in the United States and, we think, never will. An old Indian niediciau man iu the State of Washington was at tending the wife of one of the tribe, but the woman died, so the husband incontinently shot the doctor an ! killed him. The prac tice of the profession of medicine among the siwashes would seem to have some drawbacks if this case is to be taken as a typical one. 1 1" has been remarked up on as a singular phenomenon that the street railroads in many cities of the United States are owned in some other city. A new one has just been added to the list, eighty miles of street railroad in Detroit having passed into the hinds oi New Yorkers. It is not easy to see the reason for this phenomenon, but the fa -t certainly exists.
