A TENSION' roll IHiM I'KIIKO The Movement to Make Him an Allowaiu-e Gaining Strength. London, July II. A Rio Janeiro disDitch says thai there is a grow inir public desire to renew the al lowance to Doin Pedro, the ex- emperoi,on the same term and for the Maine amount as when he abdicated the throne. This al lowance has been withheld on the ground that Dom Pedro had not abandoned hisclaim to thejthrone, and was still at work, in a quiet wav, trying to renew his power in Brazil. For eonte time past it has been evident that Djm Pedro had altogether surrendered anv idea of the restoration of a moil archy in Brazil, and therefore the movement to renew his pension is rapidly gaining ground. I.Rnl untl Moral Itlglita. Seattle Telegraph: The legal riirht of a corporation to hire whom it pleases is undeniable; the legal right of a laborer to work lor whomsoever wants himisclear. A corporation ha3 a legal right to discharge its men without a day's notice ; a force of workmen has a legal right to quit a man's employ without any notice. These legal tiuhts being admitted, there re main moral and equitable consid erations. The corporation which should discharge its men without notice, and the men who should piit work without notice, would. not be observing the equities, would not be acting honorably. If either side deceives the other as to its purposes, that is not honorable. If either side fails to keep its promises, that is not morally defensible. The state cn only deal with the legal aspect of labor troubles; public opinion, however, will deal with the moral aspect. The ICeaxon for It. Astorian : Butter is sold in an eccentric fashion in California and somepaitsof Oregon. The pro ducer markets the butter in rolls supposed to weiuh two pounds. The dealer sell9 it by the roll and charges for two pounds, but the roll always lacks from six to eight ounces of full wsight. This thing has been going on for years, to the loss of the consumer, anil without prolit to any one except the middleman. The middleman buys butter by the pound and sells "it by the roll, so be makes a clear prolit on the short weight. When a dealer handles several tons of butler a day this shortage makes a large item, for on eticii roll he will make from eig'it to ten cents, or at least $100 on every ton.
