One will be in Yew Park and the other on South Commer cial street. The eleventh annual commence ment exercises of the government Indian training school at Che mawa was held to-day, A 1 irge crowd was i;i attendance and the exerereises were conducted from a platform in open air. There were delightful progranmes both afternoon and eveni g. There are 22i scholars in the school, 80 of whom are girls. J here w ill 22 graduates next year, but none this. Major Burke, of fie regular army at Vancouver, left this morning. The camp is visited by hundreds daily. A large dancing platform 60x100 feet was erected to-day, and dan cing after dress parade will he in. dulged in each evening. Excel lent music was discoursed by the regimental band. A row among the mess-house employes, in which meat axes and knives were freely displayed, was settled without bloodshed. THE HORRORS OF WAR BAI.MACEUA ORDERS MEN SHOT DOWN LIKE UOG9. Indignation Auioug the Friends of the Dead -Slowly Starved to Death. New York. June 30. A corres pondent at Santiago, writinii Mav 30, say-i : "In this citv to-dav the shooting of the officers and the sailors of the torpedo launch Gaa Ida was the special feature of a w holesale execution. I he men were marched to the plaza where mey were shot down ly a com pany of sharpshooters. This butchery not only caused indigna tion among the friends of the dead but also among Balmaceda's ar dent defenders. The dead sailors and officers weie in charge of the steam torpedo launch Gualda, in Valparaiso bay. One night the commander proposed to his ciew to desert ana go over to the con- titutional party. All acquiesced xcept one, lie noticed the ttithorities at once, and the men cere captured and taken to Val paraiso and thrown into prison. One by one they were tortured and literally made to go without food and water for two or three days at a time. The cells which the men occupied were reeking with filth and vermin. On the day on which they met their doom they were so weak they bad to be assisted to walk. The tortures to which they were subjected to by Balmaceda's agents are almost past belief." The correspondence relates other horrible atrocities by the adherents of Balmaceda. Infor mation, he says, reaches there that the insurgents have about 10,000 men at Inquique, and that they are waiting for word to march to Coquimbo and the south. Balmaceda fears this and extraordinary activity reigns here, everything possible being done to receive the money. It is stated all negotiations for peace have ended. THE DUTY ON TIN PLATE, It Went Into Effect at J O'clock Last Night. New York, June 30. The clause in the McKinley tariff bill which effects tin pla e goes into effect at 12 o'clock to-night, and to-day there is a rush by importers to get all the plate now on the wharves in bond on which duty has not been paid, through the cus'om houses before the close of business in order to escape the ad ditional tax imposed on that arti cle under the law. An Earthquake In Italy. Rome, June 30. Inhabitants of province Verona last night were thrown into a stati of excitement and fear by a series of severe earth quake shocks. Houses in some cases collapsad. In spite of the damage done there was no loss of life. Another Cyclone In Kansas. St. Louis, June 30. Brief dis patches irom several points in. Kansas and Missouri are to the effect that another hurricane swept through a wide section of those states yesterday, doing much dam age to crops. A special from ebraska Citv, eb. says the Missouri river overflowed its banks about that city yesterday and is still rising. At St. Joseph the river it running over the bank on the Kansas side. Many farms in Kansas are submerged and c: ops of wheat and corn ruined At Beatrice, Neb., the Blue river has been rising rapidly, and an overflow is threatened. It is re ported that at Wilbur and Dewitt etitions, six and twelve miles above the city, dams were washed away by the river, and several lives were lost and great destruc tion of property occurred. Kansas City, Mo., June 30. The Missouri river here is still rising, but very slowly. No addi tional damages are reported. SPREADING FLAMES. A Frenchman Drops Dead From Over Heat-Fighting Fire. Stockton, Cal., June 30. Ex tensive field tires are reported in the vicinity of Copperopolis, re sulting in the destruction of con siderable property and the loss of one life, that of an old Frenchman living near that town, Who is known as Matthew. The fire com menced Sunday afternoon near Copperopolis and ran over the hills a distance of seven miles to Byrnes ferry. Two hundred min ers and everybody in Copperopolis whe conld ngnt the nre were out to save the town and keep the names back. The trench man got overheated, and dropped dead while protecting his house from the fire. ENGLAND'S LITTLE PET. He Is Trying to Assume the Role of Respectability - London, June 30. As an evi dence of the popularity of the I'rince ot Wales, it may be stated that the levee held by the prince on Saturday was one of the most brilliant ever bela in Oueen Vic toria's reign, and was attended by more thau the usual number of the better class of nobility. The prince appeared in the best ol spirits and had evidently made up his mind to ba more democratic in the future. He smiled in a win ning way, and there was a:i utter absence of the stolid hauteur which the prince used to wear to such effect. DISTRESS IN INDIA. Inhabitants of India Suffering for Something to Eat. London, June 30. Advice from India report a distressing condition of affairs in and about Madras, owing to lack of rain, . Famine is threatened, and even now the in habitants are in want of many of the necessities of life. There has been no rain for seven months and the whole country is parched. The outlook is extremelv serious. A STEAMSHIP ON FIRE. Terrible Explosion on Skip Board In Mid-Ocean. Montreal. June 30. The steam ship Monte vidian, which arrived here to-day from London, naa a terrible experience on her way across the Atlantic. The after noon of June 24, while the steam ship wa9 a little east of Cape Bay, a fire was discovered. After three hours hard work the fire was ex tinguished. In the hold were twelve tons of gunpowder. AN AWFUL WARNING, The Young Man Can Show This to His Best Girl, Rutland, Vt., June 30. At the Christian church of Brushtown, N. Y., Saturday night last, forty three people were poisoned by eat ing ice cream. The pastor of the church and two ladies have died, and all the others are in a critical condition. Harled Into Eternity. I.ITTI.l! Rock. Ark.. June 30. Boudinct Crumpton was hanged at Fort Smith this morning for the n.urder of Sam Morgan, near Muskogee, Indian Territory, No vember, 1889. He protested his innocence on the gallows. He was dead six minutes after the trap fell. Escaped from the Penitentiary. Boston, June 30. Five prison ers escaped from the state prison at Charleston last evening, and are still at large. BLOWN TO PIECES. The Boiler or a Locomotive Ex plodes With TerrlSc Force, Whitehaven, Pa., June 30. The boiler of the shifting engine of the Central railroad of New Jersey exploded last night near Mesque hony Junction. Engineer Thomas Trip, of Mauch Chunk ; Fireman J.Pope, Linsford; and Brakemeu Gallagher and Smith, of.Manch Chunk, were instantly killed. The body of Engineer Trip, crushed and bruised in a terrible manner, was found 100 yards from where the explosion occurred. The.krakemen were blown in an opposite direction. It is evident from the wounds they were killed instantly. No trace of Fireman Pope's body has been found, and it ia thought he was blown to atoms. The locomotive was totally wrecked, and the boiler blown 300 feet up tho mountain side. There was a defect in ttae water pipes, the fire underneath the boiler dying out, and vapor issued through the firebox. The ' fireman had just descended from the cab to examine the boiler when the explosion occurred. Mote From Loadosk. London, June 30. Gladstone was able to take a short walk yes terday. The stopping of the tin plate works, it is estimated, will keep 750,000 boxes off the market, the average consumption being 1.008.- 000 boxes per month. A deed has been signed renew ing the advance to the Mariettas until February, 1892. The deed gives them the option of redeem ing the securities pledged. Lieu tenant Finley, of the weather bureau, said this morning that it was owing to a fall of 10 deg. in barometric pressure at Winne mucca that the weather is cooler here to-day than yesterday. He stated, however, that at 5 o'clock this morning the local tempera ture was 07 or 5 deg. higher than at the same hour yesterday. Also, that hot weather is cominii ud from the south, and may be here to-morrow or next day.
