New York. June 30. A corres

shooting of the officers and the
sailors of the torpedo launch
Gaa Ida was the special feature of
a w holesale execution. I he men
were marched to the plaza where
mey were shot down ly a com
pany of sharpshooters. This
butchery not only caused indigna

and officers weie in charge of the
steam torpedo launch Gualda, in
Valparaiso bay. One night the
commander proposed to his ciew

xcept one, lie noticed the
ttithorities at once, and the men
cere captured and taken to Val
paraiso and thrown into prison.
One by one they were tortured
and literally made to go without
food and water for two or three
days at a time. The cells which
the men occupied were reeking
with filth and vermin. On the
day on which they met their doom
they were so weak they bad to be
assisted to walk. The tortures to
which they were subjected to by
Balmaceda's agents are almost
past belief."
The correspondence relates
other horrible atrocities by the
adherents of Balmaceda. Infor
mation, he says, reaches there
that the insurgents have about
10,000 men at Inquique, and that
they are waiting for word to
march to Coquimbo and the
south. Balmaceda fears this and
extraordinary activity reigns here,
everything possible being done to
receive the money. It is stated
all negotiations for peace have

the better class of nobility. The
prince appeared in the best ol
