By this time the bav for n mile in every direction from the I'nion Iron Works, was studded with vessels of everv descrintinn u;on whose decks there were fully 2it,(H)0 people whe had come tliere to witness the launchin.' of tl irmored coast defense vessel '.Monterey." In addition to those on trie vessels there wer probably forty thousand people who wit nessed the launching from the shore. A small platform had been built around bv the crew of the vessel and on this were the i.resi- lential party and other di't n -n- islied guests, and also the band from the navy yard. At 4:30 Mr. Harrison pressed the electric but- n which sent the vessel down the wavs. The navy band plaved national air as she glided into ne water and immediately there burst forth the greatest noise from the steam whistles an.l fog sirens ever heard in that locality, to hich was added the thundering sounds of the Charleston's gnus as she lired a national salute.
