It is but the annual recur rence of the same old tiouble that must eiist until some permanent street improvements are made. This PRnie question is agitating other cities of the Picitic coast, and has elicited some discussion which might be applicable here. It at least shows that rlher towns aie trying to do awav with muddy streets. The subject of introducing some more modern style of improving streets is lieing quite generally diacussed, and the discussion mints up none too soon. People cau have good stieets if they will pay for them. A writer in the Or egonian says: It is nselebs and senseless to complain of muddy streets as loin; a- streets are im proved with crushed stone or gravel. The first wt of such im provements is less than stone block, asphalt or aoodi-n blocks ; but the macadam or gravel soon wears out, and is a coimtant ex peuse sit the time it is doing so, as all the siona or gravel has to be hauled away in the form of mud or dust. A ifeutleman who is in faiorof having better etreeis savs the Xichol-on navement is the brs', lieing a i:oi)th anil noNe'essr, and although in Portland it did not last forever, it lasted longerj and made a better street than macadem. :md if it had been placed on a proper foundation and the blocks carefully selected, it would have lasted as long us any one could exp.i-t. . Asphalt streets are probably the best in level around: but a great deal of wooden block' pavement, and brick paveuieut. is being laid in Eastern cities. None of these are liable to be converted into mud with such, celerity as the. cruslifit rotten stone used on the streets here.. If there is any place where an anti mud pAveuient is needed, it is right here in this moist climate. .Mrs. Abbott. "Two large and jiowerfnl men men failed to4ift her off her feet," says the Boston Herald. A mini ter of other teBls were mads, and the visitors were astonished at the results. Neither the management nor Mrs. Abbott attempt to Ac count for the results produced. They do not claim that the force emploved is spiritual, ineehanical, muscular, electrical of odic.
