The subject of introducing some
more modern style of improving
streets is lieing quite generally
diacussed, and the discussion
mints up none too soon. People
cau have good stieets if they will
pay for them. A writer in the Or
egonian says: It is nselebs and
senseless to complain of muddy
streets as loin; a- streets are im
proved with crushed stone or
gravel. The first wt of such im
provements is less than stone
block, asphalt or aoodi-n blocks ;
but the macadam or gravel soon
wears out, and is a coimtant ex
peuse sit the time it is doing so,
as all the siona or gravel has to be
hauled away in the form of mud
or dust. A ifeutleman who is in

and although in Portland it did

and made a better street than

and brick paveuieut. is being laid
in Eastern cities. None of these

where an anti mud pAveuient is
needed, it is right here in this
moist climate.

act, in donating one hundred
dollars to the Indian school at

disaster. It wilt be remembered
that the pupils of this scnool were
unremitting in their kindnesses to
the unfortunate victims of that
wreck, and the railway officials
have given thi amount as a mere
expression of good feeling for such
action.

the engineer below heard him cry

medical attention at once, and
will recover. He bad until re
cently been employed in the Ked
