Mr. Penga and Mr. Thielson, so it ia reported, are now looking ou' a route from Astoria to Tillamook hay. It is presumed they are in the interest of the Southern Pac ific. From Tillamook bay they would connect with the Southern Pacific's line at Sheridan, going through the Grand Ronde pass, lt is about sixty miles from Sheridan o ttiiamooc bay. This is the natural route fiom the Willamette valley to deep water. The highest point of the pass is not moie than t0 feet above the sea. Matesman. New Street Light. There are seven of them, which added to the number already in use will make 24 of the large '2000 caudle power are lights, paid for by the city, besides a dozen others furnishfd by the county and pii vate individuals. Albany will be one of the best lighted "cities on the coast. The Delayed Mall. A grievous protest was entert-d by citizens of this city yesterday because the mail was allowed to remain all day at the wieck on the Southern Pacific a mile below the city. There was good grounds for the complaint. The mail could easily have been transferred, as trains were lying on both sides of the track. ITEMS The Yaquiiia public school has just closed the first teini of three months this ear. An average a tendence of thi.ty-five pupils was maintained during the term. A private or select sclio 1 '-as been taken up to continue through tl.e winter. Want of funds is the cause of the discontiuancd of the public chool until the t-pring term. The weather here continues line, with the exception i an occasional short rain. The winds so common to the coast country, seem to have bid farewell, for a time at least, to this p ace, and the biv remain smooth and placid except when plowed by passing steamers. It will probably need a genuine hanowing ere spring with an occasional clod flashing, and freipient fertilizing, to produce any kind ot a crop, even of wild oatn. I A Traui Law Needed The ii ant County News says that a stringent tramp law has been passed in Iowa. It declare that any male person sixteen ears of age or over, who is physical!) able to work, who is wandering about begging or idle, and who connot show reasonable efforts to secure employment, shall be deemed a tramp, sent to jail, and put to hard work. Oregon has no such law, but should have one. There is no excuse for tramps here The Keaon Why. Why is it that Klein Bros, can afford to sell bootB and shoes so reasonable? Because they are both practical shoe makeis and make their expenses bv work ing on the shoe bench, and any boot o shoe you buy of them, no matter what kind it is, man, woman or childs. that rip, run over or the sole rips loose, they repair them for you free of charge, and as they do all the work them selves, they don't charge you 25 to tVi cents a pair extra for a w arr.i.it to pay some shoemaker to repair tbein for you. 'I hey also make a specialty of repairing rubber hoo's.
