Mr. Penga and Mr. Thielson, so

a route from Astoria to Tillamook
hay. It is presumed they are in
the interest of the Southern Pac
ific. From Tillamook bay they
would connect with the Southern
Pacific's line at Sheridan, going
through the Grand Ronde pass, lt
is about sixty miles from Sheridan
o ttiiamooc bay. This is the
natural route fiom the Willamette
valley to deep water. The highest
point of the pass is not moie than
t0 feet above the sea. Matesman.
New Street Light.
Workmen are busily engaged
putting up the new electric lights
for street purposes, ordered at the
last meeting of the city council.
There are seven of them, which
added to the number already in
use will make 24 of the large '2000
caudle power are lights, paid for
by the city, besides a dozen others
furnishfd by the county and pii
vate individuals. Albany will be
one of the best lighted "cities on
the coast.
The Delayed Mall.
A grievous protest was entert-d
by citizens of this city yesterday
because the mail was allowed to
remain all day at the wieck on the
Southern Pacific a mile below the
city. There was good grounds for
the complaint. The mail could
easily have been transferred, as
trains were lying on both sides of
the track. Uncle Sam's mail
pouches ought not be left loafing
along the road so long without
just cause.

county judge of Morrow count v,
occasioned by the death of Hon
William Mitchell, according to
law, will be supplied by the gov
ernor. No action has been taken
in the matter, excepting that peti

case of his honor's prefereme.

that a stringent tramp law has
been passed in Iowa. It declare
that any male person sixteen ears
of age or over, who is physical!)
able to work, who is wandering
about begging or idle, and who
connot show reasonable efforts to
secure employment, shall be
deemed a tramp, sent to jail, and
put to hard work. Oregon has no
such law, but should have one.
