of a dixp?tch to-night, announcing
the movement of troopa in the de
partment of the Piatte, toward
line Ridge agency, the associated
press called on Gen. Miles. He
jjaiJ "'newspapers really ought not
to publish tins sort ot thing lor it
will be in the Indian camps in less
than twenty-four hours. There is
nothing in it except that troops
ire being tent to the vicinity of
the reservation to prevent, if pos-
nible, any outbreak. Up to this
time no Indians have left their
reservations. The causes of this
threatened trouble are the failure
of their crops, delay of congress in
making appropriations for thtir
support, and subsequent delay in
getting supplies to theiu, resulting
in their being brought to the
verge of starvation and worked

Marro presented a check this
afternoon at the Commarcial
Nalivnal bank for $100, purporting
to have beerr algned by J. H"
Smith, a railway contractor. The
paying teller immediately recog
nized the cheek to be a forgery and
called the cashier, who telephoned
for an officer. Marro was taken
into custody and at the jail he
claimed that he bought the checti ,
paying $0 therefor.

nual report of United States
Treasurer Huston shows that tin
net ordinary revenues for the past
fiscal year amounted to su.i,u!,
982, w'hich sum was but twice ex
ceeded in the history of the i ov
ornment. Increase ever the year
before was lH.OIW.lWo. The ordi
nary expenditures weie $1.1)7, ".'iti,
4o5, increase is principally due to
the increase in pensions. Surplus
revenues were $105,44,496. The
receints of post office department
were $til, 100.041 and the expend.-.

increase of between five and wix
millions on both side..
There was in the treasury, be
longing to the government, on

amount of gold had increased
about four millions, while the
silver decreased nearly nine
million. Nearly seventy four
million of 4 per cent, bonds and
upwards of thirty millions of 4i
per cents, were purchased. Im
portant changes took place in the
circulating medium, but of a more
favorable chaiacter than the year
before. There was a gain of
litteen million in the btoek of gold,
an increase of 4:t millions in silver
or the contraction of tweutv-eix
millions in the vo'ume of the bank
notes, resulting in a net iusrease
of thirty-two millions in the ag
gregate etipply ol money. in

and threats ot lynching the Italians
in jail are openly made, on the
other hand the Italian population
are much arouaed over a report
that the prisoners had been
brutally beaten. The Italian con
sul Sig Corte, has cabled the
matter in full to the Italian gov
ernment and the Gazette Co oli-
tica calls for an Italian man of war
to protect the Italians in New-
Orleans.

The coroner Monday held an in
quest over the death of August

that he fell overboard while drunk.
Wellington Stokes, who was
sentenced to fourteen years in the
penitentiary for criminal assault
upon several young girls in Sau
Diego, Cat., was released Monday
by his own application. The
supreme court has irrantcd a new
trial in tne case. He was a well

ture. Near Hiltman, Ala., Henry
Smith (colored) was Ivnched Mon
thly night fur a brutal assault on
Mrs. Mary Calhoun, a respectable
white lady M years of age. The
assault was committed a week
ago, but the negro was not captur
ed till Monday night.
