An Ii!oi lunt Duty. Lane county members of the legislature have one very iniport tnt duty to perform. It is a no less matter than supporting a measuie appropriating funds for the display of Oregon's products at the world's fair at Chicago. If their own inclinations do not move them to action, surely the app'al of their no less distinguished con stituency should have the r iin- tnedi:'.:r attenhon and coneulcra- tio:i. We, as a people, can make ur wishes known, then the whole responsibility of the matter rests with the members who represent ns, and these gentlemen cannot af ford to ignerc that fact. Florence ( Lane Countv) West. The M wrlrt' lair. World's Fair ' ommissioner Wil kins, before leaving for Chicago,' Thursday, expressed the opinion that Oiegou would have ample space at the world's fair. He ap proved everything done by the committee of the State board of commerce, and had no 'doubt but everything would come out all right. Continuing, he said : "The world's fair is not beinsj got up by the people of Chicago, hut by a stock company. It is a speculation in jveiy sense of the word and the company wants to mate money. They tir-t tried to force us to ttke i less man we neeoeo, oui we wouiu ) not stand it. I am as ccttaiu as I j live now that they will try to palm off small buildings on us. Wednesday's Portland Telegram says : Since the Portland A Wil lamette Valley railroad system was absorbed oy the southern Pa cific Company, the latter corpora tion has been making rapid sti ides toward the final salvation of the road, which has earned the title of "Narrow Escape" line on account of the unlimited number of acci dent which have occurred since it was put in operation. Yesterday afternoon the Pacific Improvement Company, of Ban Francisco instituted a suit in the Un'ted States circuit court for the collection of several notes issued at divers times betwenn the dates of July 8, 1888, and June 0, of this year, for suma of money varying trom $3000 to $40,000, ai.d aggre gate, with interest at a rate of 6 percent., the sum of $2 3 ,822 71. In addition, the plaintiffs asked that the sum of 28") be awarded them by Ihe court in accordance with tne provisions of the several notes. This morning Mr. It. Koehier, vice president and manager of the Southern Pacific system appeared in court and confessed to tne com plaint, whereupon judgment was entered and the plaintiffs were allowed the sum of $1000 aa attor ney fees. For such a large amount ot .noiiey involved, this is unques tionably the most rapid action at law ever brought in this city. The t he money will be paid at once, and all parties will again be happy. The funds in question weie all borrowed from the San Francisco company for the express pu-iose of maintaining aud opera ting the narrow gauge read. A Sequel. Last week week we stated that I. D.
