says : Since the Portland A Wil
lamette Valley railroad system
was absorbed oy the southern Pa
cific Company, the latter corpora
tion has been making rapid sti ides
toward the final salvation of the
road, which has earned the title of
"Narrow Escape" line on account
of the unlimited number of acci
dent which have occurred since
it was put in operation.
Yesterday afternoon the Pacific
Improvement Company, of Ban
Francisco instituted a suit in the
Un'ted States circuit court for the
collection of several notes issued
at divers times betwenn the dates
of July 8, 1888, and June 0, of this
year, for suma of money varying
trom $3000 to $40,000, ai.d aggre
gate, with interest at a rate of 6
percent., the sum of $2 3 ,822 71.
In addition, the plaintiffs asked
that the sum of 28") be awarded
them by Ihe court in accordance
with tne provisions of the several
notes.
This morning Mr. It. Koehier,
vice president and manager of the
Southern Pacific system appeared
in court and confessed to tne com
plaint, whereupon judgment was
entered and the plaintiffs were
allowed the sum of $1000 aa attor
ney fees. For such a large amount
ot .noiiey involved, this is unques
tionably the most rapid action at
law ever brought in this city. The
t he money will be paid at once,
and all parties will again be
happy. The funds in question
weie all borrowed from the San
Francisco company for the express
pu-iose of maintaining aud opera
ting the narrow gauge read.
A Sequel.
Last week week we stated that
I. D. Driver had been arrested for
heating a bov who was caught
stealing his apples, but he was
acquitted This week Driver had
the hoy, an innocent little fellow
about nine years of age, arrested
lor stealing his apples. J.J.Wal
ton and E. O. Potter appeared for
Driver and L. Bilyeu and Geo. A.
Don is ior the boy. The case was
tried in Justice Henderson's court
before a jary and the boy was
promptly acquitted. In their
remarks to the jury the boy's at
torneys hit it pritty close when
they stated the case was brought
simply through spite. At the
beginning of the trial one of the
attorneys and Driver got to disput
ing so warmly that the Justice
