A FaHtldlous Haluion. The Astoria Columbian says that J. Lundquist. a fishetinan. upon pulling up his net the other morning, found a salmon with a silver watch in its mouth, and a rolled chain attached to the ticker. The watch had evidently laid in the water for years, ns all the steel portions crumbled to dust when touched. Its presence in tbe salmon's mouth is account ed for by the fact that salmon at this season of the vear will eagerly bite at any bright object, and ihe watch and chain had been caught by the netd-agging.m the bottom. As it was hauled in it attracted the attention of the salmon, and he took it in and in turn was taken in himself. The works in tlia watch were Waltham, and case c.jin silver. The salmon was canght just on" shore, abreas-t of the Seaside cannery. Burglar Active. The festive burglar seem9 to be abroad in the laud as he is heard from at various and divers locali ties. The "Opbir" is the name of a new mining claim filed on b an Albany man. It is located in the Quartz v' lie district. Ihe work on the new railroad from Roseburg to Cods bay is be ing pushed through with rapidity. Theie are six camps of graders and the piles are being driven at Marshlield for the terminus. In Yamhill county the question has been broached, and will doubt less recsive consideration from the powers that be, cf purchasing a farm and establishing an asylum for indigents. The Fand digging boat which was lately built at Portland is proving a succets. The steamer is a marvel of power and construc tion, and is provided with a most complete sand and gravel appara tus for digging, hois-ing, filtering and washing sand The work on the Oregonian rail way is being prosecuted with vigor. A large camp of 1 1 borers are locat ed at Shelburn, thecro.-sing of the Oregon Pacific and Nanow Gauge, and the preparations for the wid ening of the track arc nearly com pleted. J. ttamplin, state organizer of the Modern Woodmen of Amerira, is at The Dalles, where he will or ganize a ramp. At Pendleton he succeeded in f.-tablishin ; a camp. H s son is now at The Dalies, ihd has succeeded in obta:ri'g some tlxiy incmbeis. The As oiia & South Coast rail way seems to he on its feft. Ihree milli 'ns of dollars woi ih of bonds have h.'cn placed in Imdon, sub ject to cei'ain conditions which seem easy to satisfy. This is good news for Astoria, f .r Portland, and fcr the whole country lying lc twei n. Wiliiaii Billings has been sherifl" ol Hurston county, W'a-ih., for about 21 yejrs. Sometimes he is nominated by the republicans and some times he is not, but he gets there just the same. When he discovers that lie is going to have trouble in the convention he simply rei'uses to let his name go before the convention, and then runs independent. Since tbe Polk-Yamhill county line has been re-located there are arising little difficulties on every side. It now transpires that justice Branson has ma ried about a doz en couples in Polk county, and since it is determined that he re sides in Yamhill couniy, and a person residing in one county cannot fill an office in another, the question arises whether these mar riages are strictly legal. Mrs. Hunter, the women who arrived in this city a few davs ago in eeatch of one W. II. Hunter, slept Monday night in the city pi i Hon. Officer Larsen found her walking about the streets shortly after dark and as the woman could give no neeount of herself he took her to the city prison. Astorian. "Can you give me a drink on this?" asked an' intoxicated indi vidual as he walked into a down street saloon yesterday afternoon, at the same time plsicing on the bar a small leather covered bible. The bar-keeper picked it up,exa n incd it, and then placed a bottle of "snake bite" before the stran ger. He filled the glass to the brim, placed it to his lips and snipe I the contents down at one swallow, and then, with a satis fied look on his countenance, turned and walked out. Recovering.
