Just as the Southern Pa cific train arrived from California. Smith was putting on his overcoat and with the other passengers was preparing to leave the train, when three men seized him, and while two of the men held him the other put hi hand into his pocket and took bis pocket book. An other one named Bears field, under charge of hurgiary, has just been captured near this city, where be had been working tor some tune. Killed by Tramps. Cleveland, O.. Oct. 14. Mr. Critchtield, who lives near the Orville switchyards, complained recently to Marshal rotter oi the rowdyism of a cnnitof tramps who occupied an old shanty near his house. Un I- riday mnt ueputy Marshal Boydston, of Orville, ar rested James Sweeney and blarted with a rifle across the tracks to the station. Sweeney resisted.and in th struggle the two men were run over bv a l lssengcr engine. Boydston wan mangled beyond recognition, while Sweeney had his leg crushed at the knee. At the inqujfct it was brought out that ons of Sweeney's friends hit Boydston with a hilly and pushed him under .the engine, and that Boydston held to his prisoner. One McKee ha lieen arrested on suspicion of the murder. Boyd son was the coroner of the county an. I a leading democrat. Women on the Highway. Chicago, Oct. During the last two weeks more than fifty men have been held up on the down town streets by women and robbed of all they had. In most instances the women are big and strong and on even terms would be a match fir their victims, but two or three together can make shoit work of a mun who is bold enough to resLst. The majority of the robberies have occurred near the police head quarters. The polko officers have issued orders to arrest every known street walkcr and thief anil are making an effort to put a stop to the robberies. Oui'ty of Manslaughter. Skattle, Oct. 14. Indian Tim, charged with murder in the first degree, withdrew his plea of not guilty in Judge Hume's court to day and entered a plea of guilty of manslaughter. He is charged with murdering an Indian woman named Kdth, on September 20, v. ith a scythe. Jim is an Alaskan Indian and went to Orilla to pick hops. On returning to his camp at night he becauia very angry be cause Kath, his squaw, would cook him no Bupper, and threatened to kill her. 1 1 j proceeded to carry out his threat and picked up a broken scythe blade and cut her about the head and body in a hor rible manner, from which death lesu'ited a few hours afterwards. Jim tried to kill himself also, but w as prevented by the officers who effected his arrest. The Inde pendent will publish to-morrow as article received by telegraph from lresident Wooditiff, of the Mormon church, and Gov.Th.oma, of Utah, concerning the action of the Mormon conference. October 6th, forbidding polygamy. Pres. Woodruff sa it the action of con gress is conclusive and the church has no disposition to violate tho laws or defy the government. The revelation of God requires us to obey the constitutional laws of the land. Tudge Zane has recognized the action of the church as final and has recinded the action of the church as sincere and final, and has rescinded the rule excluding mormon aliens from naturalization. Gov. Thomas says : "The mani festo of the president of the church hps now been confirmed by the conference, and the gentiles rejoice that the contest began so many years ago aga:nst polygamy has t. , . - , i .V ... i" nnauy iriumpueu, tor tney relieve that never again will polygamy flourish on American soil.
