The Jeauie reached port safely. A THRILLING STOKT. How Four Men Were Reacue From a Stranded Vessel. Halikax. Oct. 15. A thrillintr story is that told of the rescue of li n men remaining on the wreck of the bark Melberbv. wMch' stranded at Little Harbor, while on a voyage from Quebec to Green ock with lumber. The caDtain and first and second officers and twelve men were drowned. All lay yesterday a crowd on the beach watched the poor unfortu nates on the crumbling wreck, bat were powerless to effect or even at tempt a rescue of them, so two men remained on shore all niirht. occasionally waving lanterns, to show the maiinor that they were not loroiten. in the morning many people assembled to make an attempt at rescue. A boat was launched with a volunteer crew. consisting ol Captain Geo. P. Uraliam, David J ranzier,Williams, I'r. AicJean, t isew Glass, and James S. MitGlanlier. Tlie brave fellows fought a terrible bttle with the waves, but eventually readied fie wreck, when a mighty cheer went up from, the anxious watchers on the snore. One by one the exhausted and benumbed shipwrecked men were lowered into the boat, and after a second desperate battle with the treakers, the boat was pafeiy land ed. This work was facilitated by the liberal use of oil. Two of the reKcued men were nick, and one hud his shoulder broken. The vessel is fast breaking up. Arrested for Polygamy. Sai.em, Or., Oct. 15. The sheriff thia morning arrested Mrs. Frank Dickman, against whom an indict ment was found by tlie grand jury, now in session, for the crin.e of polygamy. She was married sever al years ago in Illinois to a minister and coming to Oregon was married as Margaret Schatler to Frank Bauer, and again one year ago as Margaret jruether, to frank Dickman with whom she was liv ing when arrested. Verdict of Manslaughter. Portland, Oct. 15 The jury in the -case of L. J. Sprague, on. trial for the murder of Thomas Vaughn, to night returned a verdict of man slaughter. On July 27th, last, Vaughn and Sprug 10 became in volved in a quarrel in a saloon, and the latter Btabbed the former. Vaughn lived only a few hours. Uniform Weight Measure. Washington, Oct. 16. The sec retary of state has received a dis patch from Minister Ryan, at the City of Mexico, announcing that the Mexican republic will adopt the recommendations ol the in ternational American conference regarding a uniform system of weights measures. 3; KIH. It was while over looking matters on the stage that the manager came suddenly on Kingsiey and her fair daughter ami caught them hugging and kiss ing each other. ''What d-i you mean by this be liuvior?" demanded the irate wo man of Kingsiey. For want of a bet' ?r answer the young actor blurted out, "Oh, I am duing this junt for fun." Mrs. Kimball was angry bef re, but this reply made her toiling mad. Marvelous Escape of a Parachutist An Exciting Descent. "Professor" Higgius, who made an ascent Srom the Port a.e grouude, Col bridge, England, had an extraordinary ..escape. When the balloon was being freed from its weights one of the men in at tendance disarranged the para chute from the bide of the balloon nd before it could be replaced the the balloon bad risen, and the parachute was dangling below un der trapeze, upon which the aer onaut was seated. The bulk of the people round evidently thought thia was part of tho arrangement but several who had accompanied lliggina knew that a terrible u-is-take had been made, the conse- quejicea o! which might prove fatal. rliggrna, in a conversation with a press representative afterward. said he found out what was the matter directly after the balloon began 10 rse, pnd realized the peril he was in. Before he had made up hi? mind what to do the bal loon had reached an altitude of nearly three miles. He had swung himself on ms seat and dropped it to the open parachute. He got entangled in the cords and then the descent began, the parachute with Higgins turning over and over like a bale of cotton, the movement down being very rapid. Higgins says he lost coJ6ciousness for some seconds. Then he felt the folds of the parachute resisting th s wind and checking tlie rate ot deecont. The aeronaut was swinging under it with one ol the cords un der Ira left arm and another round his left leg, and he was able to slightly regulate the twisted para chute with his right hand. He alighted safely on a building near Stoke Station. His limbs were numbed and much discolored through the strain of the ropes. A most exciting balloon adven ture was witnessed recently in France. The balloon La Patrie ascended at 4 o'clock in tho after noon from the gas works at Cour bevoie, a suburb of Paris, the car rontaining two young u.en named Le Prince ami Dumuid, both about 20 years old. On leaving the ground the balloon caught in the branches of a tree, a slight hole being made in the envelope. Nevertheless, it rose rapidly, being carried along by ft violent wind, but when paBS ii g over the Bois de Boulogne at the height of a thousand metres an ex lo.-ion occurred and the bal loon w Hit nn enormous rent in it, began to descend with alarming rapidity. Fortunately the envelope was turn in such a manner as to form a paiachute, and the aeron auts succeeded in lighting wiihout accident, one of the young men only being slightly bruised. At Tremont. a suburb of Seattle, this morning a 14-year old girl, by the name of Thatcher, was on her way to fcschooh. Fearing her cries migitt attract attention the villain choked the girl until she was un conscious. Alter several hours the girl recovered consciousness and told h. r mother what hud happened. KILLED IIEK FATHER. An Inhuman Wretch Who De- served a Terrible Fate. Eokd- At'x, Oct. 15. This city was horrified to-day by a domestic tragedy. A policeir an named Por- 3ueret was ehot by his own aughter, a girl of 18. In order to spare her mother's feelings the girl had kept her terrible secret and tried iu cveiy way to avoid go ing into her father's presence. At 0 o'clock this morning, while her mother was out, Porqueret met his daughter. A terrible sli uggle cn sued, and the girl managed to reach a loaded revolver which was hanging with some other weapons on the wall of the room. Then she turned and fired it point blank at her father, who fell dead onJbe BPt, a bullet hamz passed through nis temple. L.aier on me girl went to the police station and gave a full account of the affair. As scon as the news leaitea out, the nenple almost went mad with rage and horror, and strategy had to be resorted to by the authorities in order to convey the body to the morgue without its being attacked. Overdue Vessel Arrives. San Francisco, Oct. 15. The British hark Inch Keith, 151 days from Hamburg, yesterday brought information that tho Tacoma, long overdue from Now York, was still afloat. The bark spoke the Taco ma since th( last time on tho 8th I Kin t 700 miles from this port. Scarcely had insurance men made haste to withdraw their offers of 05. per cent, premium on the vessel and cargo than the la- coma was sighted, and by 3 o'clock she was safely anchored in the stream. Scarcity of Lumber. City ok Mexico. Oct. 15. Great scarcity of building lumber exists here. Aloat timber in the vicinity of the railroads has become ex l.aualed and it is impossible to brir.g lumber from a distance dur ing the wet season, owing to bad roads. Berlin, Oct. 15. Dr. Koch has ceased to make experiments in the cure of consumption. It is pre sumed his method is a failure. Justice Miller's Successor. Nkw York, Oct. 15. The Sun's Washington correspondent inti mates that the successor to Justice Miller will be Attorney-General Miner. DROWNED IN THE UcU.EN7.IE. While Furdiug tha Stream Ob Horseback. Eugene, Or., Occ 15. A young man named Eby, aged about 18 years, was drowned in the McKen zie river, Monday evening. He was fording the river on horse back. Not long afterward his horse was found some distance down the river with the saddle turned under him. Search was commenced at once and the body was found to-day. Fugitive Patriots. Paris, Oct. 15. La Presse says that Dillon and O'Brien after their flight from- Tipnerary took 'pawriaroij -a-saiJfng vtaer-Vatx lauded at Luc buimar, on tlie corst of Normandy. Sunday they passed f he night at the residence of K-jffalovich, a banker, whose daughter is the wife of O'Brien. M tndav they came to Pane, thence proceeded to Raffalovich's country lionaa at Gif, department of Seine et Oiae. They returned to Paris last night. Their address in this city is secret. If news received from America is favorable to their Irish mission to that ountry, they will fctart for New York at the end of the week. If it becomes manifest that it is their intention to remain in Paris, the government will request them to leave. Humors are in circula tion that Raifalovich and members of his family declare that Dillon and O'lirifn have not been in France, and assert that that they liavo sailed for America. Weather Report. Washington, Oct. 15. The storm that has been in Northern Minnesota moved northw ard and continues stationary. Areas high and pressure central over the Mid dle Atlantic states and Utah, with clear weather in all districts except light rains in Iowa, New England and Northern New York, and snow in Colorado. Frosts occurred from West Virginia to Tennessee, in Oregon and Northern California. Temperature has fallen cast of the Mississippi liver, and risen in the Middle slope. The Myatery Deepens. Inquiry does not reveal that young Dr. Cooke, whose mysterioos cheap- iea ranee m uuicago was recorded in yesterday's dispatcher, and w hose parents reside in this city, was in any way connected with any love affair as reported. Two of tho moat desperate criminals known to the Pacific slope was captured Chicago to-night by Jaiuea VVells. Farg ATJo. The captive desperadoes are Charles II. I home, alias Dorsey, and George H.Shinn. Their last exploit in California as the dtring escape from San Quentin. Thome waa serving a life sentence for murder and rob bery, aud Shinn was in for hold ing up an entire railway train.
