Thk Tribuut'd summing up of the money and business of the country for last week contain some interesting points. It remarks that the brokers were crazy to ssll stocks, and that though $6,043,139 was paid to the government during the week in duties, the treasury actually held less nior.ey by $3,800, 000 at the end than at the beg in ginning of the week, to that absorpton by the government could not have caused selling of stocks. The value of imports for the week was (13,153,145, or 60 j.er cent more than in the same week last year; but considering how large a part of goods, hafl'ily shipped to avoid heavier duties, were but consigned to foreign agents here, the pressure to make foreign payments cannot have been great. Sterling exchange has been moving rapidly toward the specie exporting point, but has not reached that point, and meat -while exports are swelling rapully retching $10,247,772 last week, or 40 percent more than a year ago. All know that imi-orN have cul minated, and now will rapidly decline, while exports rise at this season, and in October of last year exceeded imports nearly $30,000, C00. In view of these things, the heavy imports hardly seem a reason for pressure to sell stocks. It would be easier to ace the selling to the extraordinary demand for money in legitimate busines. In September payments through clearing houses outside New York were 18.6 per cent greater than la&t year, the increase being 1289,000,000, quite enough to suggest an enormous new demand for money. Wtet of the Alleghanies the increase for the month was over 28 per cent, 164,- 000,000 more than last year. The wonderful activity here reflected does indeed call for and use more currency and move capital, but the exchanges themselves settle pay ments they record, and lessen the demand for money. The known shipments by banks to the interior last week were (5,781,000, and the movement thither has now ex ceeded $75,000,000 since July 20, and still continues unabated. But all this does not after the fact that the banks still report $11,500,000 urplue, and in that state of thinps monetary pressure can hardly ac count for haste to cell stocks. It concludes that the real cause of the favor to sell stock is the reach ing of the climax of the bcom in stocks that so enhanced prices in May. It thinks that the most encourag ing features are that the expansion in the volume of business, of which all departments but especially the legitimate trades and productive industries are getting the beuelits without any drawback. Wheat movement is retarded by specula tive mice, which have risen one cent during thee week, though ex porta in four weeks are less than OO.C0O bushels against 1,050.30 last year. Corn has risen neatly a cent, the exports for four weeks having been 2,575,000 bushel, against 4,200,000 last year. In Western receipts eicce August 1, there has been a decline oa 7,200, 000 bushels wheat and 6,400,000 corn, but an increase of l,S0J,OCO oats, which have declined a cent daring the week. Toik products are steady, and oil, except for the fall in Ohio certificates. Cotton is unchanged, though receipts from plantations m Septemper were much the largest ever known ii the first month of a crop year, reaching 855,274 b.des, against 848,779 last year, and there has been a heavy inci ease in exports, while northean shippers hare taken 135.C50 bales, against 96, 077 in September last year. The demand for wool has im proved greatly, manufacturers bjing more confident as the market for good, and sales of wool at Boston have exceeded 7,000.000 pounds for the week. An astonish ing increase continues in consump tion of iron in nearly all manu factured forms, keeping mills crowded with orders beyond their sapaeity. Though railroad build ing for the year has been but slightly above last year's record, and rails are weak at abotif f30, the other dcma.id thus far prevents decline in pigiron. At Cleveland sales of ore this year have been 8,500,000 tons, exceed ing last year's to date by 33 per cent. The clothing trade is also pressed with couhtry orders be yond all expectations, at Cincin nati, St. Lou's, Milwaukee and Chicago. Boston boot and shoe shipments exceed last year's by 5,000 cases a week, and for the year thus far by 118,000 cases. The United States authorities lay their hands upon a Chinaman on Puget Sound, w ho had pur chased an Indian girl for immoral purposes, and after having tried him and proved the undisputed facts in the case, concluded that the law did not reacli the peculiar eltuation and individuals con cerned, and turned tlie Chinaman !oo3r. It appears that in this particular case, the commissioner would have ben justified in "con structing" a little law to fit the casj, without creating any destructive effects upon the exist ing statutes.
