The Astoria Columbian says
that J. Lundquist. a fishetinan.
upon pulling up his net the other
morning, found a salmon with a
silver watch in its mouth, and a
rolled chain attached to the
ticker. The watch had evidently
laid in the water for years, ns all
the steel portions crumbled to
dust when touched. Its presence
in tbe salmon's mouth is account
ed for by the fact that salmon at
this season of the vear will eagerly
bite at any bright object, and ihe
watch and chain had been caught
by the netd-agging.m the bottom.
As it was hauled in it attracted
the attention of the salmon, and
he took it in and in turn was
taken in himself. The works in
tlia watch were Waltham, and
case c.jin silver. The salmon was
canght just on" shore, abreas-t of
the Seaside cannery.

In Yamhill county the question
has been broached, and will doubt

powers that be, cf purchasing a
farm and establishing an asylum
for indigents.
The Fand digging boat which
was lately built at Portland is
proving a succets. The steamer
is a marvel of power and construc
tion, and is provided with a most
complete sand and gravel appara
tus for digging, hois-ing, filtering
and washing sand
The work on the Oregonian rail
way is being prosecuted with vigor.
A large camp of 1 1 borers are locat
ed at Shelburn, thecro.-sing of the
Oregon Pacific and Nanow Gauge,
and the preparations for the wid
ening of the track arc nearly com
pleted. J. ttamplin, state organizer of
the Modern Woodmen of Amerira,
is at The Dalles, where he will or
ganize a ramp. At Pendleton he
succeeded in f.-tablishin ; a camp.

about 21 yejrs. Sometimes he is
nominated by the republicans
and some times he is not, but he
gets there just the same. When
he discovers that lie is going to
have trouble in the convention he
simply rei'uses to let his name go
before the convention, and then
runs independent.
Since tbe Polk-Yamhill county
line has been re-located there are
arising little difficulties on every
side. It now transpires that justice
Branson has ma ried about a doz
en couples in Polk county, and
since it is determined that he re
sides in Yamhill couniy, and a
person residing in one county
cannot fill an office in another, the
question arises whether these mar
riages are strictly legal.
Mrs. Hunter, the women who
arrived in this city a few davs ago

He Wanted a Drink.
"Can you give me a drink on
this?" asked an' intoxicated indi
vidual as he walked into a down
street saloon yesterday afternoon,
at the same time plsicing on the
bar a small leather covered bible.
The bar-keeper picked it up,exa n
incd it, and then placed a bottle
of "snake bite" before the stran
ger. He filled the glass to the
brim, placed it to his lips and
snipe I the contents down at one
swallow, and then, with a satis
fied look on his countenance,
turned and walked out.
Recovering.

recovering. J. W. Blain was con
fined to the house for a few days
but is again out. Grant t'roman
is still confined to the house but
is convalescing, Judge Blac'tburn
is better. J. R. Whitney, jrnior
