It is th- invention j of M. Ful liiffard, of i'aris, aid i he has spent many years and a fortuneol 1 ,000,(XX francs in bring ing it to perfection. The advan tages blaimed for this new rirle are cheapness, a perfect weapon cost ing but 5 ; rapidity of aciian, it being possible to tire iot times in less than three minutes ; force, ex ceeding that of gunpowder, and absence of noise and mn-ike. It is said that the humanitariani have taken the cattle undr their rare, and not, perhaps, before it was time. The details of the horn awing operations which have been published recently, and which many farmers atlirui to lie neces sary in order to prevent further cruelty, have stirred the spiiit of lovers oi animals, and it is proposed that horn-sawing, if erforiued at all, and all other operations on animals whicii involve pain, should be performed while the animal is under the influence of chloroform, ily some the practice is recom. mended not only by its humanity but also by its cheapness. It may seem to some people to be carrying tbe spirit of pedantry too far into farm work, yet there is perhaps wisdom of a practical soit in it. It would be well, however, to fully understand the propel use of the chloroform before it is used. But really the most practical way would be to adopt the hornless breeds of cattle, and gradually get rid of the horns in that way.
