The thief who wanted to escape used black hairs, and, win n they curled, he fled in the direction in dicated, unless they shriveled, in which case he remained quietly about bis usual haunts. The whites say the old daiky would seldom manipulate the white hair. until at least one dav after being informed of the theft, and that there were other indications that he used other than occult power in finding the thief. The western part of the state was a favorite ground for horse thieves, who found it easy to run good horses through the mountain passes in4l Tennessee, and it was chiefly in the catching and prottction ol these that old Abraham Durbiil was employed. Eventually lit seems to have used his jtowers so much in favor of the thieves thai some horse owners got exasper ated beyond endurance, for he was found one irorning hanging by the neck to the limb of a tree, with the body of Pete Stacey, a well known thief, hanging beside him. A Rus sian ninied Alexander Kwiatkow sky arrived here on Monday direct from St. Petersburg, and brought with aim the tirat account of the Tiumen tragedy, in which several exiles were shot dow n by guards. He had gained his news almost at lirsi hand from a relative of one of the victims, Elene Oginski, lg years of age. The Bufferings of this young girl and her 100 com panions on the r journey from Ekaterinberg to Tiumen were in tense. They walked 500 miles un- der the hot sun and when they appealed for lelief, the guards beat them with the stocks of tbeir guns. Driven to despair, the prisoners turned on the guards when near Tiumen and began to fight for free dom. The result was horryifying. The guards fired upon the priso ners, and the first victim was a young princess. Her head was pierced by a bullet, and she fell dead without uttering a word. Still the i-oldiers kept up the firing and out of a small band of 100 pol itical prisoners twenty wete killed and twelve wouuded. It is feared the remainder will be severely punished if not hanged. A number of stony Indiana have been in and around Donald for ome tim. Before) they left on Moudav they threw one of their best horses down, then piled wood ' upon it and burned it alive. It waa reported to bhentt Kedgrave about 7 o'clock on Tuesday morn ing. The sheriff and Officer 11. Redgrave proceeded to their cam p. about two miles from Donald, ana found the poor creature standing up. burned irom shoulder to bead. flesh all charred and skin burned and eyes blind, and in a horrible . suffering state. Other Indians, the Kootenays, were camping there, and the sheriff insisted thev shoot the animal, which they did, the officer bmsbing its misery with his revolver. Later the sheriff found out that the cause of their burning the horse was that one of their children was very sick, and to make it well they placed the horse in misery. These are the Indians who are said to be Chris tians, who have theirown worship, and who attended the Episcopal church at Donald and conducted themselves outwardly the same as whitejnen, but wno still practice their devilish pagan torture. No wonder Mr. Duncan refused to ad minister the sacrament to these tribes of people, for he knows, after thirty years' sojourn among them at Metlakliane, that they are not worthy of it. But Bishop Rid ley, after a few years' expe r'tnee .with them, and iteroaj better knowledge ol their Qualities. . admits them to the .-acred rite. Challenge.
