One day it was the 3d of May a man did appear in my oflice and informed me that he was a stran ger, and, needing legd advice had applied to the local ju ige, who had told him to come to rat, as it was a well-known fact that I had never lost a suit. County Judge Shaw and commis sioner Grim anc Cornelius have been up in the Santiam coun try the past few days looking after county highways. Last year a contract was let to Mr. Heath to open up a road along the Little North fork from Marion l'a tor's, two miles above Mehama to Elk p-airie, and the principal business of the court v as to view this work. They found i done accoiding to contract and accepted it. In rela tion to the Minto trail, they found that the O .P. railroad company bad men at work making a good and sufficient tr.iil wherever their road had destroyed it, and yester day morning lon A. Smith, ap pointed by the county court lor that purpose, etarted out w ith a pack train and a force of men to i lear and open up the trail where it has not been tou. lied by the railroad. So when this point is completed the trail w ill be in the best shape it has ever been. There is a wanon road as far east as Stewart's, about two and a half miles beyond Gatesville, but the rest of the way it is simply a trail. Salem Journal. Hoom slippart at S. 0. Saarls'. I'-mdnation pictures the presi dential family as living on the pinnacle of splendor and luxury. Any other house in town almost offers more real comfort to its oc cupants, and there are a hundred houses where more art and luxury are found in the finish and fittings. The family have no living-room an sitting-room that is private and their own, save the end of the draughty corridor upstairs. The offices have absorbed so much of tlie house that only one bed-chamber ci n be set apai t for the guest whom they may wish to entertain. .Much of the table service is plated ware, the carpets are often turned and the curtains patched. Mrs. Harrison says anxiously : "If we can anoru new curtains this vear. quite as if she were a housekeeper wnn a n us' -ana ou a salary instead of the mistress of the White House.
