on the day after the young girl had
begun her visit the mother called
her eon to her and spoke gravely to

It is divided into 106 di-tricts,

trict. Of these, fifty-two are paid

the character of thecountry. The
remainder get from two to three
cents per capita.

Warren, one of the most prominent
fruit driers in the county, died rud
denly near Saratoga, early this
norning. His deaih is supposed
to have lieen cau-ed by eating
canned oysters. The coroner's
jury are iuvesfgating the case.

been burning over the foot hills
along and just south of Fresno
river near B lies postoffice. Some
17,000 acres have lieen burned over

limber. The fire is still burning

A Horrible Story of Shipwreck

advices Irotii Valparaiso say that a
small boat, with ten survivors of
t be ill-fated steamer. Gulf of Aden,

peninsula in a storm on March 12,
arrived at Quel Ion on March 2"),
after 14 days' of peril and hard
ships. The steamer was bound
from Greenock to Valparaiso with
a cat go of heavy water-mains.
It is Bupiosed that during a
storm some of them got loose and

si le. The passengers and crew
numbered eighty persons.
Five lroats were lowered, but one
was swamped near . ttie si earner
and the occupants drowned.
The women and children and a
number of the ctew were in the
large lifeboat under command of
Chief Officer French. Tho smaller
lifeboat was commanded by Second
OiScer Blain. with nine persons,

News was received here todax
that Fred Breckert, a German sixty
years old, living about 22 inilet
west of Lancaster, h ! been mur
dered. Breckert's body was found
in bis house. He had been shot
through the back of the head.
His trunk was broken open and
his clothes, watch and money-
taken. The verdict of the coro
ner's jury was that the deceased
was murdered by unknown par
ties. breckert is reported to have left
considerable money in a San Fran
cisco bank.

Hunter, master of the steamship
Geo. W. Elder, was arrested thit
afternoon by Deputy United
states Marshal. The complaint
was made by Charles McCarthy,
third mate of the vessel, who asks
for damages in the sum of $250 for
injuries sustained through an as
sault committed by the captain.
The action arises from an aiteica
tion which occured on the vessel
Thursday, when, it is alleged, the
Captain struck McCarthy two
blows in the face without provoca
t on. Captain Hunter was re
leased on bonds.
