Arrives Departs JirfsainlM p in S.S-Spml C.SOs OA REFUL L Y IN VESTIQA TE. In matters pretaining to the business and financial relations of the people, it is always best to move with care and thoroughly in vestizate all the hearing of thit question. for instance in the matter ot trusts, which are known to be pre-eininsntly the fioe oi the pro ducer and working men. and as a general thing are to be safely made the objects of waged warfare, it may sometimes happen that it in safer to retain the apiarent trust than it is to invite conditions that might be even worse. This is illustrated in the action in California in the sugar trust business, just recently reversed by the dicision of the supreme court , of that state. The Chronicle says that in granting the writ in pro hibition asked for by Havemeyer and others against the superior court and Judge Wallace the Supreme Court jof that state has not touched upon rhe legality or illegality of trusts. That question will come up in another case, that of the people against th Amri can Sugar Trust Company, which has not yet been heard on appeal Upon deciding the case of the people vs. the sugar trust, referred to above, Judge Wallace rendered a decree forfeiting the charter of the defendant corporation, and ap pointed Patrick Keddy, a lawyer of that city, receiver to take and hold possession of property alleged to belong to the defendant. Have- meyer sued out a writ of prohi Dition, but the receiver went into possession of the property and has kept possession ever since, to the immense advantage of a competing sugar refinery, which thus secured a monojioly of the sugar business. 'Now comes the supreme court and grants an absolute writ of pro hibition, and decides that the Superior Conrt had no jurisdiction to appoint a receiver in the case The result of the decision is to restore the property to Havemeyer and to reopen the American Sugar Refinery, the more remote conse quences being a decline in the price of sugar to the consumer and setting to work ot a large number of men who were thrown out of employment. Trusts are no doubt an evil under certain circumstances, but that does not justify a court in ex ceeding its jurisdiction in seeking to cure that evil. In the present case the practical and immediate effect of an attempt to suppress an alleged trust was to create an actual monopoly; and between trusts and monopolies it would be hard to choose. oldie r boys who have drifted to this coast will remember the gal lant Colonel during the time when we all responded to the call of Father Abraham for six hundred thousand more. - THB j lapa Route ! It is useless to deny the fact, that a predominating majority of the people of Oregon are in favor of the free coinage of silver. They consider that silver is the poor man's money, that there is a short age at present in the necessary amount of circulating medium for the use of the people, and that the free coinage of silver would help to fill that shortage. These are facts, and all of the specious argu ments that can be piled up cannot gloss over or cover those facts. After all the New York mur derer Keromler is likely to be lightened into eternity by the use of the electric current. The dynamo men with their utmost efforts tried to keep their constant and alternating currents from tak ing his life, but they could not succeed for their patents could not entirely hold the electrical cur rents. NOBTfl Turkeys, Ducks, It is a matter of pride for the entire Pacific coast, that the Union Iron Works of San Fran cisco, made the excellent job it did upon the United States cruiser Charleston. When it received the contract for doing the work.it was predicted that the company would make a dead failure of the Charles ton, as so large a piece of work could not be turned out successful ly on this coast. Now it looks very much as though the leading Eastern shipbuilders had been left behind in the competition for the construction ot tne two new cruisers. From the position of an unknown shipyard the Union Iron Work hss advancd d to a place among the foremost in this country. Thb Fort Dodge, Iowa, Times, says : Col. Atkins of the 92nd 111.
