County Judge Shaw and commis
sioner Grim anc Cornelius have
been up in the Santiam coun
try the past few days looking after
county highways. Last year a
contract was let to Mr. Heath to
open up a road along the Little
North fork from Marion l'a tor's,
two miles above Mehama to Elk
p-airie, and the principal business
of the court v as to view this work.
They found i done accoiding to
contract and accepted it. In rela
tion to the Minto trail, they found
that the O .P. railroad company
bad men at work making a good
and sufficient tr.iil wherever their
road had destroyed it, and yester
day morning lon A. Smith, ap
pointed by the county court lor
that purpose, etarted out w ith a
pack train and a force of men to
i lear and open up the trail where
it has not been tou. lied by
the railroad. So when this point is
completed the trail w ill be in the
best shape it has ever been. There
is a wanon road as far east as
Stewart's, about two and a half
miles beyond Gatesville, but the
rest of the way it is simply a trail.
