Ir is said that the ridicule heaped upon t ho "bloomer" cos tume for ladies drove all the ad herents of it out ni its use, includ ing even Mrs. r.loonicr herself, who recently celebrated the oOth anniversary oi her marria.ee at her home in Council I'diifl's. Town. Ox the subject of the mXaj pre dictions of disaster, death and destruction, as well as the claims of supernatural powers that have been and are being put forth by various persons, there is to much credence and attention given by the public. Ii they were not accorded a hearing these fanatical disqoieters would cease to mouth their maniacal vaporings. Oi the recent prophecy of the destruction of Ban Francisco aud Oakland, California, believers of which came as far awav as this place, the Chronicle very justly sayB : Now that the day of doom has vaseed without any sitm of a de structive earthquake or a tidal wave or anything of the kind, it - may be well to consider whether it is not the duty of the State, in . . the interest of its citizens, to inter vene and put a stop to these alarm ist prophecies. In the preeent are oi the world and with the fund of scientific knowledge and in .. formation which is within the reach of all, it is an anomalous condition of affairs that a few ut terly irrespondsible men and women should be allowed to frighten a community or any por tion of it into hysterics by making predictions which can be but one of two things, either the ravings of lunatics or the vaporings of per sons deuirous of obtaining cheap notoriety. A law should bo passed for the suppression of thee alarmists, making it an offense to predict such disasters as were promised for yesterday, unless it can be shown that the prophet is crazy, in which event the law as it now stands is ample to meet the case. We do not rxsrmit public threats to be made of murder or lucendiar lam whv. then, should the law 1 any more liberal to thoso who threaten wholesale destruction of life and property by some convul sion of nature which they cannot by any possibility foresee? There viU niu-avn be false nropbets, and thev will alwavs tind credulous fools to believe in their predictions unless the law can take nom 01 th authors of the mischief and put a stop to their prophecies. A few convictions and punishments under such a law would bring the trade of prophesying disaster into disrepute. Ir is a matter of congratulation that the Montana Kiiatorial mud dle is settled at last, and that the state is represented in the United States senate. The truthfulness and honesty of this claim, or rather its utter un truthfulness and diabolical Judas Iecariotism, can be judged by the recent whipping of David Hosea, an aged and highly respected farmer in Indiana, against whom there was not a breath of com plaint of any kind, only hatred of the whitecaps.
