. .l,4.l.v.,,-,Ji.!,';.V,1:;iisa THE MOKyiKGr IIEBAI.13; WEDNESPAT APB1I, 16, 1890. LIKE AN EAItTHQL'AKH. I The Oroan.l Open and Land Jsj Shifted. Most extraordinary landslips in ' consequence of the late rains and floods occurred at Minden, Queens-; land, one of the farming centers in ;' the llcwewood scrub, which gave rise to a report th:it a severe earth quake had taken place there. I Cracks and figures ri many feet ; have opened in all directions and large areas of land moved bodily, j Houses were destroyed and whole i farms were rui:ed. A corres pondent visited the locality ondj the following is the description oi j one case out ol' several : j An elderly German farmer I named Gadischke was sitting in-; rain outside fallinjr in torrents, while the wind blew with thr force of a gaie. Suddenly a re port like that of a 100-ton gun startled the fatuity and threw them into consternation. Th:s report was fol!fw;-il by a secoi d, and them a dull rumbling noir-e like thunder; but they knew the nound came from underground, and the house commenced to rock ir all directions. Uadisvhke ran to the door just in time to see the barn totter and fall to the ground. He was tcrtitieJ. He saw the ground cracking in all place and ielt it moving. A third horrible report taking place, he ru.-hed inside again, de termined at all hazards to take his familv to some place of safety. , They "fled to the door, but seeing j that great gaps were continually j appearing in the moving ground, ! they were afraid t-j venture from , the house lest they should step j into one of the Assures and disap- i pear. A galvanized iron tank j full of water alongside the house i was thrown oil the stand, anu, I rolling down the hill, crushed into j the cowhouse. Simultaneous with ' another deafening report Gadihke paw his cowhouse U-comc a wreck. ; The rambling continued and the ; ground moved tor two and a half hours, not stopping till i:So' o'clock in the afternoon, loud re ports going ort" during the whole, time. The rain continued to fall ; in blinding sheets. The poor old ; man removed his terrified family J to some friends and then went back I to sec what he could save. His; plot of twelve acres is entirely de- ' stroyed. and within this aiea were ! the "whole of tiieold fellow's build- ingS and these are hopelessly; wrecked. 15aek oi his farm j an ther eight or ten acres have i moved, and this was covered with 1 a nice crop of corn. In the fruit garden cracks and fissures can be' seen twelve or twenty feet deep. ! Other farms had suffered in a! similar manner, and at least eighty acres of land have bodily shitted, in some places of a depth of forty feet. The farmers are completely ruined. The occurrence has caused great excitement in the district. Ttor. O. Pnlnifr' 'oertler.f of 5lnie, j Tweedale's block, First street, Albany, Oregon, opened Jan uary 20, 1800.
