On the one side are arrayed nearly 400.0(H) workingnien, over 350,000 oi whom belong to the Miner's Federation whlcjj is engineering the strike. Opposed to them is an equally pow erful association oi the treat mine owners throughout the United Kingdon, w ho have been forced by the attitude oi their men to com bine for the defence of their inter ests. Tho miners demand an advance in waces of 10 to 15 pin- cent, and contend that it is amply i juciuiea oy tne recent rise in the price of coal. A re-; porter recently interviewed l J.j ireen. of Norton Sound, Western " Alaska, and he confirms the state ment of Dull and others. "People wonder where the wild fowl come from," said he. "They see the sand-hill crane, wild goose, heron and other fowl every spring and fall pursue their unwearied way, but like the wind, they do not know whence thev come or whither they go. Up on Golovin bay, on the" north shore of Norton Sound, is tho breeding place of these fowl. All the birds in creation, seeming ly, go to that country to breed. Gees, ducks, swans, and thou sands upon thousands of sand-hill cranes are swarming there all the time. They lay their eggs in the blue-stem grass in the lowlands, and if you po up the river a little wav from the bay tho noise of the wifd fowl is almost deafening. Myriads of swallows and robins are there, as well as millions oi mag nificent grouse, wearing red combs and feathered moccasins. This grouse turns white as enow in winter. You can kill dozens of luicy teal ciucks or grouse as lai as butter rolls in a few momenta. The wild fowl and bears live on salmon berries with which all the hills are literally covered."
