Committee Decide in Favor Republican Senators. of Washington, March 8. The senate committee on privileges and elections spent nearly the entire day on the Montana case, and the result was the same as predicted in the3e dispatches. After' care- itilly uoing over the case a resolu t'.on was presented to the effect that Wilbur Fiske Sanders and Thomas C. Power were duly elected senators from the state of Montana and were entitled to seals in the senate. The quest ion was put, and Lvarts, Siiooner, leller, rrye and Hoar, republicans, voted in the affirmative, and senators Saulsouiy Vance, Pugh and Turpie, demo crats, in the negative. There will be two reports; the majority in favor of sea ting Sanders and Power, and the minority in favor of Clark and Mauinnis. The case will be called up in the senate at an early dav. There will be a debate, and and it will lie decided by a strict party vote in favor of the repub lican claimants. Colonel Sanders is very happv to-niirht, and remarked thai, with the facts before them the commit tee could do nothing else. Clark and Mag'mnis have allecied to believetiiat they stand some show, but the decision of the committee has convinced them that there is no further hope. They want the case taken into 1 he senate, how ever, and debated, so that when defeated upon a party vole they can pose as martyrs, and return to the iH'oi.le as such. An eve ning Post reporter called on Sidney laillon and asked him for particu ars regarding Secretary Windom's proiosition to substituto for United States 4 per cent bonds amounting to $4,000,000, which now form part of the sinkiug fund of the Union Pacific railroad, an equal amount of lirst mortgage lionds of that railroad bearing G per cent, interest. Dillon remark ed that he was not at liberty to say how the matter was standing between the government and the railroad, but acknowledged that such and arrangement would be regarded favorably by the latter, t he sale of its bonds bein: ah ad vantage, while the interests, al- though coming o ut oi tne roau s earnings, would be applied towards extinction of the road's liabiity to the government. If this be reform the people have had quite enough of it. The senate committee on elect ions discussed the Montana Sena torial contest on Saturday without arriving at any conclusion and aj pointed a 8ubK.-ommittee Senators Hoar and Gray to make a colla tion of the facts in the case and report them to the full committee next Saturday. (The committee has since reported seating the re publican members.) Secretary Windom has accepted the offer of the North American commeicial company oi New York and Sail Francisco a"nd awarded it the exclusive privilege of taking seals in Alaskan waters for the next JO vears. Va. and Featherstone, of Arkansas. The other contested cases are lo lie pushed along as rapidly as possible. Ex-President Cleveland has sold his suburban residence near this city for $140,000. His friends pay that he has cleared $100,000 in the (i-ansaclions, but lots of people here ltelieve that the entire amount received is profit as the place was given to him by a real estate syndicate for the purpose of Iwoming property in the vicinity. The bill providing for the hold ing of a World's Fair in 1892 is still in the hand of the house until it is fixed up to suit the Ch -ago people who have not yet fullv de cided just what they wan . It will pass the house though not without opposition, but its fate in the senate ts regarded as. very un certain. Many republicans arc beginning to talk up speaker Reed as the canidate for 'SJ2. We might go farther and fare much worse. Mr. Reed has two of the principal re quisites to make a successful presi dent Drains and backbone. The members of the senate in their attempts to discover where and how the newspapermen get the reiiorts of the proceedings in ex ecutive sessions are furnishing a heap of tun for the newspaper men without gaining any information. If all the senators attendant upon an executive session were locked up for 21 hours afteawards it would lie perfectly safe to bet that the newspapers of the next day would not have the proceedings of the session. The Three America's Congress has adopted a resolution recom mending the appointment of a com mission to examine and reiwrt up on the feasibility of buildinc a railroad to connect the three America's, and Representive Buckalew has introduced in the house a joint resolution authoriz ing the president to have an ex amination made and to report the result to Congress.
