that a big rat slaughter has Ix-en
going on at that place for the last

grain and provisions, corn-cribs

them. The whole town has
turned out and the people have
killed nearly 5,000 rats.

Story Of a Man who was Burled
and Taken From His Grave.
St. Louis, March 11. The local
Siress is puzzled over the case of
' oh n J. Connor. It was asserted
that he died, and that his body
was taken to the morgue, where it
was identified by his wife, who
had him buried "in Calvary Ceme
tery. A few days later it was said
that O'Connor was alive, that his
wife had been mistaken and that
the man who was taken to the
grave was not- her m'shand. It

buried some time lietween the
night of Monlay. February 10, and
the afternoon of Wednesday.
O'Connor was seen Saturday night ,
ml declared most emphatically
that the grave in the cemetery is

across the abdomen. He is of the
opinion that he was really buried
and that his body was taken up
and conveyed to a dissecting room
while in a state of suspended ani
mation, and that when the first
incision was made it caused a How
of blood which restored him to
conciousness. lie savs that he
went to a lodging-house on Monday
evening and that he knew nothing
more until Wednesday night, when
he found himself seated on the
court house steps in a lazed con-

To Annex Dahomey.
Paris, March 11. A report has
been received by the (jovernuient
from the Governor oi Senegal,
confirming the rumor of a week
airo of an encounter between the
French and Dahonians. Accord
ing to the latest dispatches, 800 of
the King of Dahomey's troops at
tacked the French force, under
Commandant Terrilon, at Atzebo.
After a severe fight the French re
pulsed the natives, killing and
wounding 100 of them.
It is reiwrted that the Govern
ment intends to annex the King
dom of Dahomey to the French
possessions in Africa, and that
larce expedition will be sent to
the west coast. The expedition, it
is said, will be under orders to act
promptly upon its arrival, in order
to avert "the putting to death of
many captives on the occasion of
the king's accession to the throne
it lieing the custom in Dahomey
to sacrifice a large number of pris
oners and Dahonians at all State
and religious ceremonies.

Disaster.

patch from Mansfield, Ohio, says
"The I'ittsburg, Fort Wayne an
Chicago Railroad had the worst

and thousands of dollars' worth

'The third section of westbound
frciirht train No. Jt.'J broke down
mile west of Iikeville and the
fourth section (1f the same train
crashed into the rear end. Im
mediately after the crash a tank
car oi' gasoline in front of the
calnmi-c exploded and scattered the
burning liquib over the debris,
which look tire and burned fierce
ly. On Ihe engine were Engineer
John Cowan, Fireman Harvey
(ialehoue and the head brakeman
Edward Miller. All of them re
ceived probably fatal- injuries
before the lire readied them, but
when their bodies were found the
lire had masted them. Cowan
and Miller were married and had
two children each. They lived at
Alliance. Gatehouse was unmar
ried and lived at Doylestown. The
oil from two other lank cars added
fuel to the lire, which consumed
twenty freight cars and the tieson
about f00 feet of track. So intense
was the fire that the steel rails
were tw isted out of shape and the
bell on the engine was melted.
The through passenger trains were
sent over the 'Nypano' via this
city, Crouton and Orrville. The
cause of the wreck was the failure
of the dead cntrineer to stop when
nacired bv a brakeman Irom tne
disabled train. The supposition
is that the three men were asleep
on the engine.

Advices from Ravispe, bonora,
state that on the 4th inst. a posse
of Mexicans overtook and had a
fiirht with six renegade Apaches

lKiundary line. One Indian was
killed. One Mexican was killed
and another wounded. They are
the Apaches which have been
lepredating in Old Mexico for the
last four years.

ing bill passed the committee of
whole and came up this morning

senate concurrent resolution in
structing the senate and house
committee on immigra:ion to in
vestigate the workings of the
various laws on immigration was
taken up. It adds to the scope of
inquiry into the subject of the pur
chase of American industries by
foreign capital. After some discua
sion the matter went over without
action.
Among the petitions presented
and referred was one from Florid
asking for a duty of $1 per box on
foreign oranges.
'Mitchell introduced a joint ie
olution. proposing an amendment
to the constitution providing for
the election of senators by a direct
vote.
Mr. Morrill offered f. resolution,
which was agreed to, directing the
secretary of the interior to report
any information in his department
in relation to the authorizing of a
lottery company by the Indian ter
ritorial government in the Creek,
nation.
Hoar called up a resolution re
ported by him yesterday for ex
clusion from record of certain en
tences interpolated by the Call in
the report of his remarks in hie
discussion with Chandler some
weeks ago. In course of the re
marks on the controversy Ed
munds used the expression whicL
