A duel which occasiontd a great enaattou at tha time of its eccnrrenee was out. between Henri Delagrava and At8ponse lliviere, tha aausa be iag the success of tha former in woo--g a young lady la whein they wera both attached, lliviere insulted his successful rival by slapping bim oa the cheek in a gaming saloon and it was agreed that a dual should take place, in which the life of ana shou'd be endod. The details were left to their secends to arrange,, and, until they faced one another upon the field, neither of the young men knew in what form they were to brave death. On the fallowing morning four men met in a quiet wood: They were Riviere, with M, Savalle, his second, aud Delagrave, who was accompanied by a doctor named Ilecque'.. The latter informed tha rivals that M. Savalla and himself had arrived at the decision that, in order to secure a fatal reault to one of the principal?, it would be best to leave out of the ijiios tiwn hwnrds or pistols and to trust hi the mora sure action of a (itauiV poison. Whi a spesking the last words the doctor spun intc tha air a glittering gold piece ami, as it tell, bavalle cried "Tails." It fell with the head upper most, and Savalle said, "The tint tin ice is yours. Monsieur Delegrave." The two whose ate was contaiued in those inii'icnt-looking black Dulls had hhewn no sign of trepidation while the doctor explained the awful prepara tions that he had made for the death of one of them; and Dela-rave's face was perfectly impassive as he selected and wasl-.ed dvwn with a lass of claret one of the globu'es. "And now, M. Riviere," said the doctor. Riving iix'.fixled his hand and took a pill, utich he swallowed with as little appearance of concern as his opponent, A minute passed, two, three, and still the duelists ttood motionless. 'It is your choice again, M. Dela-L-ravv," said the doctor, "but this time ou must swallow the pill at the stnie instant that M. Riviere swallows the one you leave for him." Dela irrave paused for a moment, looking in silence at the two halls that lay be. fore him. The closest scrutiny showed not ".he sli&Meet difference between them; one was harmless, but in the other rested the pall of eternity the silence and peace of that sleep which kuowa no awakening in ih a world. With a start ha drew his eyes from the box, and putting his finger and thumb into it drew forth one of the remaining pills. Riviere took the solitary one remaining and both men simultaneously gulped down their fate. A few seconds passed without auy perceptible movement on the part of cither of tkem, and then Riviere threw uj. his hands, and with out a sound fell flat upoa the grass. He turned half round, gave one con vulsive shudder, and as his rival bent over him breathed his last. The fair cause of this awful tragedy was bo harritied as it that she refused to see Delagrave again, and the memory of tnote few minutes weighed so heavily upon him that he followed Riviere to the grave in a few months' timu. . WONDERS OF A GROTTO. A Kauaurk<le New Cave Near Adelsherg. Vienna Disiatch to the London SUtiard. A new grotto has been recently dis covered and opened to the public at not quite 20 minutes' distance from the famous Cavern of Stalactites at Adelsberg, in Carniola. This province of Austria is very rich in grottoes and cn.e.-, hut the one just discovered seems to be superior to all the others, aud is likely io be more renowned than the Adelsberg caves, the largest and most magnificent hitherto known in Europe. The new grotto is, in the arst place, iieuer connected man tne old one. Cave- follows tac, without passages or corridors, in hich the visitor can see nothing; and w hen I add that a walk through the new grotto occupies rather more than two hours it can be imagined how rich it is in variety and sights. It is sunw-white in color, re lieved only by portions of gr:iish hue, whereas at Adelsberg the pre valent color is yellowish. lbe grotto eyens with a deep ravine and a number ot comparatively shal 1 w caves, in which the stalactites take the lorm oi curtains crvidly spread wing?, and tl. drops and sUlagntites have the appearance of huie cactus plants, witti beautiful while glittering pendants. Tne nex. cavt-s show forms of various animals, tho finding out of which is an agree able occupation for the imagination of visitors, of whom certainly not two will agree as to what they bare seen. Going farther, the , visitor, walks through a succession of leftv dames until the ballroom is reached, three times as large ns the corresponding dacingroom at Adclsburg. In all these caves the eruaments fomed by the staiactites are much lighter, more transparent, and. therefor, more n't f r ctl-ir aohtrasts thai , those cf Adelsberg. . The roof, for instance, of the balhoom ' seems tor be adorned w ft i hundreds of ilacs ana reamer . each flag having- his ataff formed oi penaant tuber, aroued which the standards cr t a an era ara V wound. Tha walla are formed of myriads of diamonds, and if the ballroom ia lighted, a variety of colors, from alabaster white to deep red, seem to shins frost the Sags ar streamera or curtains a fairy sight: which excites the administration even of those who havt already seen much of that kind f thing. Tho most remarkable cave is the last one. Its roof is vaulted; its farthest wall is formed by snow-white rock of limestone, which divides the grotto from the mountain river, Folk, which rushes behind it, and the two side walls arc covered with indenta tions, mostly formed cf single drops. The visitor may imagine himeelf to be a toy shop, to various are the little figures wl.ijh protrude from these walls, but that his attention is drawn to a number of enormous trees in the center of the cave, some rising to a height of forty or fifty feet, each with numerous branches strewn with drops instead of leaves ip wonderful regu larity of form.
