lions took place this morning near
Stanford, Conn. Three hundred

what form they were to brave death.
On the fallowing morning four men
met in a quiet wood: They were
Riviere, with M, Savalle, his second,
aud Delagrave, who was accompanied
by a doctor named Ilecque'.. The
latter informed tha rivals that M.
Savalla and himself had arrived at
the decision that, in order to secure a
fatal reault to one of the principal?, it
would be best to leave out of the ijiios

in silence at the two halls that lay be.

out a sound fell flat upoa the grass.
He turned half round, gave one con
vulsive shudder, and as his rival bent
over him breathed his last. The fair
cause of this awful tragedy was bo
harritied as it that she refused to see
Delagrave again, and the memory of
tnote few minutes weighed so heavily
upon him that he followed Riviere to
the grave in a few months' timu.

Adelsherg.

A new grotto has been recently dis
covered and opened to the public at
not quite 20 minutes' distance from
the famous Cavern of Stalactites at
Adelsberg, in Carniola. This province
of Austria is very rich in grottoes and
cn.e.-, hut the one just discovered
seems to be superior to all the others,
aud is likely io be more renowned
than the Adelsberg caves, the largest
and most magnificent hitherto known
in Europe.
The new grotto is, in the arst place,
iieuer connected man tne old one.
Cave- follows tac, without passages
or corridors, in hich the visitor can
see nothing; and w hen I add that a
walk through the new grotto occupies
rather more than two hours it can be
imagined how rich it is in variety and
sights. It is sunw-white in color, re
lieved only by portions of gr:iish
hue, whereas at Adelsberg the pre
valent color is yellowish.

these caves the eruaments fomed by
the staiactites are much lighter, more
transparent, and. therefor, more n't

Tha walla are formed of myriads of
diamonds, and if the ballroom ia
lighted, a variety of colors, from
alabaster white to deep red, seem to

curtains a fairy sight: which excites
the administration even of those who
havt already seen much of that kind
f thing.
Tho most remarkable cave is the
last one. Its roof is vaulted; its
farthest wall is formed by snow-white
rock of limestone, which divides the
grotto from the mountain river, Folk,
which rushes behind it, and the two
side walls arc covered with indenta
tions, mostly formed cf single drops.
The visitor may imagine himeelf to
be a toy shop, to various are the little
figures wl.ijh protrude from these
walls, but that his attention is drawn
to a number of enormous trees in the
center of the cave, some rising to a
height of forty or fifty feet, each with
numerous branches strewn with drops
instead of leaves ip wonderful regu
larity of form.
