Since, however, tbe people of America and other 'unds have been enabled to pit Hostetter's cicuiajli Bitters against that unseen foe, malaria, it is no longer araradox, but an easy possibility. Whatever malaria evolves its misty venom to joison ttic air, ana decaying unwhole aoine vegetation lmpregnater the water, there, in the very stronghold of miasma, is the auxiliary potent to disarm the foe and assure efficient protection. FALL mr A COITNT. Up IMeadK iuilty tci a tkarg cf Forgery. New York, Oct. 31 William C. Tanner, the French Conut, who has been rictimiziiig business men of this city by forging their names to checks, was arraigned before Judge Marline to-day. He presented a rather shabby appearance. He told the Judge that he was per fectly willing to admit his guilt, which was the result of poverty, and asked that he be dealt with according to law. He forthwith pleaded guiity of ftrgery in the third degree and was remanded for sentence. Documents on his person prove that Tanner comes of good French stock. His career of crime dates back to the forgery of Sarah Bern, hard t's name to a check for 10.CU0 francs, which was successful. Dur ing the actress' last tour he tried to repeat thefperformance, but failed. FKEDICTIONS. Kumors if Railway Combinations that are to be Made Seen. San Francisco, Oct. GO. The recent reported purchases of Santa Fe stock by Oould and Huntington adds strength to the prediction. Till: 1IIMTISU WHEAT CROP. It Will Not Prove So Good ms For merly Reported. Lomion, Oct. 31. Perhaps the smallest town in the world in which a newspaper is pub lished is Orondo, in the Big Bend country the home of the Orondo News. The village consists of three not very imposing buildings, one being used as a store, one as a dwelling, and one for the printing office. The present population comprises eight souls four adult males and three women and a lit tle girl. The town lies immediate ly on the left bank of the Columbia, liere that grand river rushes be tween steep mountains on tbe west and high abrupt bluffs on the east. The compositor on the News keeps batch" in the little room occupied bv the type cases and a six column army press. A kitchen table is used for an imposing stone, and the cook Btove serves to warm the otlice and try the bacon for both the editor and the printer. But on other house can be seen from the "town," and that is across the river, at the foot of an almost perpendicular moun tain, which towers abruptly fully one thousand feet above the river, leaving barely enough level space at the river bank for a house. Where the patronage of the News comes in from the spectator cannot see, as there can not possibly be more than a dozen persons living within a radius of three miles from Orondo. If the News succeeds there, it certainly would seem that a paper oueht to make a living anywhere. No wonder the rural editors are all getting rich. It would seem that it is cheaper to run a newspaper than a cider mill. Let ns give the readers of the Her ald a little timely advice. Turquoise hearts are being adopt ed as sleeve buttons. Single-pronged hairpins have flat tope, made up of moonstone faces in burnished gold crescents. A late idea in silver bookmarks is a flag-pole with a flying banner, to the pole of which is attached a tiny clip. A charming departure is a claret colored crystal vinaigrette encased in a filigree gold cover ttrewn with rough sapphires. An admirable conception in um brella handles is an opaque amber crook, beautified by a narrow, winding strip of garnets. A ring of a choice ilesciiption is set with a pearl of delicate green tint in a circle of diamonds and sapphires alternating. A whim of the fair sex is to wear a brooch composed of a raised crystal heart in the tenter of dia monds and turquoises alternating. Four enameled violets with a diamond dewdrop on each have their stemj Iwund around by a lovers' knot of burnished gold and form together an elective brooch. Re triotiutf the Sale of Morphine. In view of the reputed laf-ge in crease in morphine consumption in this country, it is of interest to note the recent action of the Con gress of Legal Medicine in Paris. The use of morphine has reached such an alarming pitch in France that actual deterioration of the race is thretened, and with the purpose of restricting as far as pos sible tbe facilities for obtaining the drug, the congress has passed reso lutions, and asked that they be sanctioned by legislative authoriiy, to the effect that (1) "Wholesale druggists and chemical manufac turers shall sell morphine and cocaine to pharmacists only, and delirer the poison at the buyer's bouse, f.2) Pharmacists shall dis pense only once, unless the con trary be mentioned by the pre 6criber, a prescription containing either morphine or cocaine."
