Wheat is worth '.;; x.. cents. SPARE THE F0SE3IS. Little Vigorous Legislation Needed Prevent Forest Fires. Mr. II. Ii. Turner, one of the railroad party with Col. T. E. Hogg, in a speech before the citi zens meeting in this cityafewdavs ago, referred to the question of the preservation of the forests of Ore gon as a most important matter, and he was right. During the past dry season forest fires have been unusually destructive. Large ex tents of timber land have been burned over, and a few rears more I carwrau-a there, liie others were of this kind will destroy much of ! Sheepmen start a b'aze after their flocks have passed, with the object of securing a fresh growth of feed on the cleared and fertil ized ground fcr the next season. The lires spread beyond all control : and thousands and millions of dollars of damage is done. A little wholesome legislation making the ; burning of timber a crime, punish- ' able in as rigorous u manner as any other arson might prove bene ficial. He has for the past few years been in the employ of L. K. HIain, but failing health compelled him to retire from business, and it was with the hope of recovering from this indisposition that he a short time ago went to Colorado Springs.
