Little Vigorous Legislation Needed
Prevent Forest Fires.
Mr. II. Ii. Turner, one of the

Hogg, in a speech before the citi
zens meeting in this cityafewdavs
ago, referred to the question of the
preservation of the forests of Ore
gon as a most important matter,
and he was right. During the past
dry season forest fires have been
unusually destructive. Large ex
tents of timber land have been
burned over, and a few rears more I carwrau-a there, liie others were
of this kind will destroy much of ! J;io uk s, Horence t alien,

tiors. Thev are, in almost everv
instance, the result of carelessness,

move on. leaving their fires burn

their flocks have passed, with the
object of securing a fresh growth
of feed on the cleared and fertil

The lires spread beyond all control :
and thousands and millions of
dollars of damage is done. A little
wholesome legislation making the ;
burning of timber a crime, punish- '

any other arson might prove bene
ficial. The Oregon legislature
should give this subject attention
at the next session.
