A depth of fifteen fathoms was found about a mile ofl shore along this part of the coast, while at a dis tance of eight miles from shore depths of from 68 to 85 fathoms oc cur. The water deepens regularly from the shore outward, and the bottom consists mainly of fine sand which is characteristic of Oregon and Washington. ISo cod was found by the Aloatross in this re gion. President Harrison Krdeeiuing Ills Pledge t Kedace Them. Washington, Oct. 3. It will be remembered that during the last days of Cleve'and's administration the govetnnuet's loaus to the national banks wete increased to about $00, 000,000. Oeccial Harrison, during the cam paign, premised that the amount should be decreased, since it was widely claimed that most cf the loais were made to favor politicians fnd were not in cue interests of the peo ple. That promise is being fulfilled. Ihe as::jrtcate has been decreased to about $40,0(0,000 since March, and before congress convenes it- will come down to prohablv $-23,000,000. This money is being applied as rabidly as possible to the purchase of outstand ing uouas, the extinguishment oi the national debt; and the application of the money to the purchase uf bonds In open market is so greatly in excess of the : eduction of loans to national hanka that no fear can possibly be entertained iu anv quarter that the calling in of the loans will distress or affect the .auney market. It may alTect the volume of operating funds of a few national banks, but it cannot in the least degree make an impres sion upon the circulating medium of the country, Assorting Produce. J. W. Stahl in Indiana Farmer. It ia an established rule that when two grades are mixed the poorer detracts from the better; the better does not enhance the poorer. These things apply to everything we pro duce. Ask the dealer in fruits, vegetables or grains what one thing leads ottener than anything else to return unsatisfactory tolthe producer, and he will tell you failure to assort carefully and vigorously. How true ibis is we can most readily see by visiting the fruit and vegetable markets, for the articles here present wide divergencies in quality, owing to their perishable nature. One man has picked berries carelessly, allowing a few very small, or unripe, or misshapen to i! only a few, yet cn account of them the boxes remain unsold, while welt assorted berries of no better quality than the average of his are sold readily Another man has not assorted tomatoes carefully, putting in a few too nearly ripe; aud by the time the boxes reach the market these tomatots have become over ripe and have been jarred to pieces aud over the others. Ihe entire box must be tacrificed. As we pass from stall to stall, or from one commission house or retail establishment to another, we may see multiplied such examples as these. What is true of fruits and vegeta bles is true f-f cur most important f:irtn crops. We must ass n t are fully it we would bell to v.ood ad vantage: and the iiiulir. depends as much upon seliio at thu maximum 1 u ice as upon ci t w-u; at the Hi t u : :u u m cost. Assorting ii but doi:t- as th crop is harvested, thought it may not 03 actually necetsary to assort at this time. By assorting as the product is harvistcd we tava i-ne handling; and we also uain most & bruised appv, for example, if not taken out wl.e:i gathere nill rot and spoil all in con tact. A'Soi-thig really requires little labor. Ou iek Promotions. Disarming an Cnscea Foe. "This was sometime a paradox," us Hamlet Eays. Since, however, the people cf America and other .'auds have been enabled to pit Hosiettcr's Stcina?h Bitters against that unseen foe, malaria, it is no longer a paradox, but an ea6v possibility. Whatever malaria evolves its misty venom to poison the air, and decaying unwhole some vegetation imprcgnatcr the water, there, in the very stronghold of miasma, is the auxiliary potent to disarm the foe and assure eflicicnt protection, Feyer and ague, bilious remittent, dumb lguc and ague cake, no matter how tenaciously they have fasienet their clutch on the ty6tem, are first forced to relax their tfra? and eventually to abandon it alto gether.
