Washington,' Oct. 4. In ' July
last the newspapers of the Pacific
coast canea airention to tue re
ported discovery by Captain Bell,
of the steamer A. B. Field, of an
important cod bank eight miles off
JNe8tucca, ur., where he tcok large
numbers of cod of excellent quali
ty.' The entire region was ex
plored by the fish commissioners
on the steamer Albatross during
September, and the official report
of Captain Tanner, just received,
disproves the existence of such a
bank anywhere in tnat vicinity. A
depth of fifteen fathoms was found
about a mile ofl shore along this
part of the coast, while at a dis
tance of eight miles from shore
depths of from 68 to 85 fathoms oc
cur. The water deepens regularly
from the shore outward, and the
bottom consists mainly of fine sand
which is characteristic of Oregon
and Washington. ISo cod was
found by the Aloatross in this re
gion.

things apply to everything we pro
duce. Ask the dealer in fruits,
vegetables or grains what one thing
leads ottener than anything else to
return unsatisfactory tolthe producer,
and he will tell you failure to assort
carefully and vigorously.
How true ibis is we can most
readily see by visiting the fruit and
vegetable markets, for the articles
here present wide divergencies in
quality, owing to their perishable
nature. One man has picked berries
carelessly, allowing a few very small,
or unripe, or misshapen to i!
only a few, yet cn account of them
the boxes remain unsold, while welt
assorted berries of no better quality
than the average of his are sold

assorted tomatoes carefully, putting
in a few too nearly ripe; aud by the
time the boxes reach the market
these tomatots have become over ripe

must be tacrificed. As we pass from
stall to stall, or from one commission
house or retail establishment to
another, we may see multiplied such
examples as these.

steamer Corona, of the Ouachita
Consolidated Lie, left here last even
ing for the Ouachita river, with a full
cargo of freight and a good list cf
passengers. She exploded her boilers
it Fa set river, nearly opposite Port
budson, at 11 :4j this moraine, caus
ing the loss of the steamer, and about
forty lives.
